Description
Hal is a young man from the city of Lux, identifiable by his blonde afro, tanned skin, and a texhnolyzed left arm. His age is noted as twenty. Initially, Hal is a member of the Racan, a gang of young texhnolyze users operating in the city.

The core of Hal's personality is defined by his intense and ultimately destructive emotional attachments. He is deeply involved in a complex, polyamorous relationship with his two friends, Shinji and Yooko. While this arrangement functioned when it benefited him, Hal's inability to accept that Yooko did not return his affections led to a consuming jealousy, specifically targeting Shinji. Unlike Shinji, who believed in a form of freedom within these relationships, Hal was not truly free; his profound emotional dependency and possessiveness drove him down a dark path. His jealousy grew into a consuming hatred, causing him to turn against his former friend.

Hal's primary role in the story is as a tragic figure whose personal failings lead to his downfall and transformation into a significant threat. Consumed by his bitterness, he abandons his former life to become one of the Shapes, the mindless, monstrous beings that invade Lux. This choice represents a complete surrender of his humanity. His motivations are not political or ideological but deeply personal and vengeful. His goal is to settle his score with Shinji, returning to demonstrate his new, monstrous strength and resolve their past conflict through violence.

His key relationship, and the catalyst for his entire arc, is with Shinji. Their friendship is destroyed by Hal's jealousy over Yooko, who loves Shinji. The betrayal cuts deeply, and when Hal reappears as a Shape, the sight of him leads Shinji to dissolve the Racan, marking a point of no return for both characters. Their tragic connection culminates in a final duel. Despite his transformation and newfound power, Hal is unable to defeat Shinji. In a brutal end, Shinji kills Hal by impaling his eye socket with a texhnolyzed finger.

Hal's development is an arc of tragic descent. He begins as a young man in a found family of peers, albeit one with deep-seated emotional flaws. His inability to cope with rejection causes his love to curdle into hatred, leading him to willingly sacrifice his identity to become a Shape. He transforms from a flawed human into a literal monster driven solely by a need for revenge. His notable ability, aside from his proficiency as a fighter in the Racan, is the physical augmentation of his texhnolyzed left arm. After becoming a Shape, he possesses the superhuman strength and resilience common to those creatures, which he uses in his final confrontation with Shinji.
