Description
Kurogane is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. He originates from the country of Japan in a different dimension, where he served as a ninja and the personal bodyguard to the princess of that land, Tomoyo. His background is defined by a violent and single-minded pursuit of power, which led him to slaughter countless enemies. Disgusted by his bloodthirsty nature, Princess Tomoyo used her magic to exile him to another world, but not before placing a curse on him: every time he kills, he loses a portion of his physical strength. This curse is a crucial element of his character, forcing him to restrain his lethal instincts and seek alternative ways to resolve conflict.
Kurogane’s personality is gruff, aggressive, and impatient. He rarely speaks more than necessary and often expresses himself through threats or blunt criticism. Despite this harsh exterior, he possesses a strong sense of honor, loyalty, and justice. He despises those who harm the weak or betray their comrades, and he secretly holds deep affection for his travel companions, though he would never admit it openly. His temper is quick, and he frequently clashes with the talkative magician Fai D. Flourite, whom he finds irritatingly cheerful and secretive. Over time, however, this antagonism gives way to a grudging respect and a protective bond.
Kurogane’s primary motivation is to return to his home world and have Princess Tomoyo remove the curse that weakens him. To do this, he agrees to travel with the witch Yuko Ichihara and join the group—Syaoran, Sakura, Fai, and the creature Mokona—on a journey across dimensions to collect the scattered feathers of Sakura’s memories. As the story progresses, his role becomes that of the group’s warrior and protector. He often takes point in combat, using his raw strength and skill to defend the others, especially the less battle-ready Syaoran and the vulnerable Sakura.
Key relationships define his development. His bond with Princess Tomoyo is one of loyalty and unspoken devotion, though his exile forces him to confront his own violent past. With Fai, he starts from mutual annoyance and evolves into a partnership of survival; in later arcs, Kurogane becomes fiercely protective of Fai when the mage’s traumatic history is revealed. His relationship with Syaoran is mentor-like, as Kurogane trains the younger fighter and respects his determination. Mokona serves as a rare source of levity and non-judgmental companionship.
Over the course of the series, Kurogane undergoes significant development. He learns to fight not for the sake of killing, but to protect. The curse that once limited him becomes a tool for growth, teaching him restraint and control. He discovers that strength without purpose is meaningless, and he gradually opens his heart to his new companions, accepting them as a second family. By the end, he returns to his own world changed—less isolated, more patient, and willing to express care through actions rather than words.
Notable abilities include superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, honed through years of ninja training. He wields a sword that can cut through nearly anything, including magic barriers and physical objects. He is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and possesses heightened senses. The curse placed on him does not affect his ability to fight non-lethally, and he learns to incapacitate enemies without killing them. In later parts of the story, he also gains a magical sword and demonstrates the ability to sense dimensional rifts and threats, though his primary power remains physical combat.
