Description
Fay D. Flourite, also known by his birth name Yuui, is a powerful magician from the country of Celes and one of the central characters in the narrative. He is a tall man with blonde hair and blue eyes, physically appearing to be in his early twenties, though his actual age is significantly greater due to the influence of his magic.
His background is marked by profound tragedy. He was born as a twin in the country of Valeria, where the birth of twins was considered a terrible omen that brought misfortune upon the land. The kingdom's king, driven to madness, locked the young twins in a pocket dimension where time did not flow. Eventually, the king killed everyone in the country and then himself in front of the twins, leaving them as the sole survivors. The dimensional sorcerer Fei-Wang Reed later appeared and offered to free only one of them. Yuui's brother, whose name was Fai, chose to save Yuui and was thrown from a tower to his death. Fei-Wang then altered Yuui's memories, making him believe he had selfishly chosen his own life over his brother's. To manipulate him further, Fei-Wang promised to bring his twin back to life if Yuui became his pawn, placing two powerful curses upon him. The first curse compels him to kill any magician more powerful than himself, and the second is designed to use his own magic to collapse the world around him.
After these events, he was found by King Ashura-ō of Celes, who took him in and gave him the name Fai, as well as the surname Flourite. To suppress the growth of his magic and control the first curse, Ashura placed a magical seal on Fai's back in the form of a phoenix tattoo. For years, Ashura acted as his protector and mentor. However, Fai eventually learned that Ashura had only taken him in with the intention of being killed by Fai's curse, a fate he could not bring himself to fulfill. Instead, he sealed the sleeping Ashura away and fled his home world, going to the dimension witch Yūko Ichihara to trade the tattoo on his back for the creature Mokona, which would allow him to travel between dimensions and never return.
On the surface, Fai presents himself as cheerful, carefree, good-natured, and energetic. He is known for his constant smile and playful behavior, often teasing his companion Kurogane with nonsensical nicknames. Despite this lighthearted facade, he is deeply emotionally distant, refusing to let anyone get too close to him because he believes his very existence brings misfortune to those around him. Kurogane is consistently able to see through this act, sensing the profound sadness and self-loathing that Fai hides. Beneath his smile, he is a deeply conflicted and fragile individual who places little value on his own life, only fighting seriously when the lives of those he cares about, namely Syaoran and Sakura, are in danger. His primary motivations throughout much of the story are to evade the awakened Ashura and, more deeply, to find a way to fulfill his pact with Fei-Wang and resurrect his dead twin brother.
His role in the group is that of a powerful sorcerer, though for a long time he refuses to use his full magical abilities, relying instead on weapons and his agility in combat. The source of his magic is the blue color of his eyes, which also grants him an unnaturally long lifespan. His magic is specialized for attack and defense, and he is incapable of performing any kind of healing spells. He is perceptive, highly intelligent, and a skilled fighter, especially with long-range weapons.
Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Kurogane is central, starting with playful antagonism and evolving into a deep, complex connection. Kurogane is the first person to genuinely see through Fai's masks, and he is the one who later forces Fai to live when he is ready to die. After having his left eye consumed by a clone of Syaoran, drastically halving his magical power, Fai is turned into a vampire to save his life, forced to drink Kurogane's blood to survive. This transformation causes his personality to shift dramatically; he becomes colder, more solemn, and intentionally distant, using Kurogane's real name to sever their emotional bond for what he believes to be his companion's own good. He also shares a loyal and protective relationship with Sakura, acting as her devoted servant. His interactions with the white Mokona are often a source of lightheartedness in the group.
Over the course of the story, Fai undergoes significant development. He is forced to confront his own tragic past and the curses that control him when the group travels to his home world of Celes. After much suffering and loss, he eventually begins to value his own existence, discarding his self-destructive tendencies. He later gives up the remainder of his magic to help Kurogane, and ultimately recovers his lost left eye, restoring his full power. By the end of the narrative, his perpetual fake smile becomes a genuine one as he learns to accept the bonds he has formed with his companions.
