Description
Arumi Asahina is one of the two main protagonists of the story. She is a twelve-year-old girl in the sixth grade who was born and raised in the Abenobashi shopping arcade in Osaka. Her family runs a French-style restaurant in the arcade called the Grill Pelican, where her eccentric father works as a cook and her stubborn grandfather, Masayuki Asahina, is the founder.
Personality-wise, Arumi is notably mature and level-headed for her age, often acting as the sensible and pragmatic counterweight to her best friend Sasshi's more excitable and oddball nature. She has a strong-willed and determined character, but also possesses a fiery temperament and a strong personality that allows her to stand her ground. Her personal motto is that the most important thing is one's health. She frequently uses a paper fan to keep Sasshi in line when he makes stupid comments or gets up to no good. Unlike Sasshi, she is more adaptable and accepts the reality of her family's impending move, though she still shares a deep bond with him.
Arumi's central motivation in the story is rooted in the dramatic changes happening in her real life. Due to redevelopment plans for the Abenobashi district, her family is closing their restaurant and preparing to move to Hokkaido, which would separate her from Sasshi. This context of impending loss and change underpins her journey when she and Sasshi are suddenly transported through a series of bizarre parallel universes, each a warped parody of different genres like fantasy RPGs, science fiction, and Hong Kong action films. Her primary goal throughout these adventures is to find a way back to their original, real Abenobashi.
The most significant relationship in Arumi's life is with Satoshi "Sasshi" Imamiya, her best friend and classmate. They have grown up together in the arcade, and their dynamic is a central pillar of the narrative. Arumi is often the voice of reason to Sasshi's impulsive and otaku-driven ideas, though she is not immune to the absurdity around them. Other key figures in her life are her family members, including her grandfather Masa, whose accident with a magical pelican statue triggers the start of their interdimensional travels. Her family is also noted to be the keeper of one of the arcade's magical insignias, the Pelican.
Throughout the series, Arumi's role evolves as she navigates the chaos of the parallel worlds. While she initially maintains her pragmatic and sometimes domineering demeanor, the adventures force her to confront her own emotions about change, growing up, and her future with Sasshi. The series explores her resilience as she adapts to each new reality, often finding herself in situations that challenge her usual composure, such as being forced into an embarrassing magical girl transformation or becoming the butt-monkey in a dating simulator world. Despite having no magical powers of her own, she proves to be resourceful and resilient. Her journey is ultimately tied to her personal growth and coming to terms with the transformation of her home and her relationships.
