Description
Dragon Shiryū is one of the central protagonists from the manga and anime series, recognized as the Bronze Saint of the Dragon constellation. He is considered the most mature and wisest of the five main heroes, often displaying a calm and collected demeanor that sets him apart from his more impulsive comrades. Shiryū is a young man of Sino-Japanese heritage with long black hair and green eyes, and he is known for the large, green and white dragon marking that appears on his back whenever he burns his Cosmo. This marking is not a tattoo but a manifestation of his life force, which begins to fade if his Cosmo drops to dangerous levels or if he is near death.
Shiryū was one of the orphans gathered by Mitsumasa Kido to be trained as Saints to serve the reincarnated goddess Athena. He was sent to the Five Old Peaks of Lushan in China, where he endured six years of rigorous training under the legendary Libra Gold Saint, Dohko. To earn his Dragon Bronze Cloth, Shiryū had to prove his mastery by reversing the flow of the massive Lushan waterfall using only his own power. The Dragon Cloth is legendary for its defensive and offensive properties, having been hardened for over two centuries under a mineral-rich waterfall, earning it the reputation of possessing the strongest fist and the strongest shield among the Bronze Cloths.
In terms of personality, Shiryū is defined by a profound sense of honor, gratitude, and a willingness for self-sacrifice. He is a noble and loyal individual who does not hesitate to risk his life for the sake of his friends or to protect the innocent. This sense of sacrifice is a core trait, demonstrated early on when he nearly bled to death to revive the dead Cloths of his comrades. He greatly respects his master, Dohko, from whom he learned not only combat techniques but also fundamental wisdom for life. Unlike many enemies who fight for power or evil, Shiryū represents the ideals of Athena's Saints, fighting with a just heart and despising those who betray the honor of a warrior, such as Cancer Deathmask. His strong bond of friendship with Pegasus Seiya is a key relationship, beginning when Seiya saved his life after a near-fatal battle in the Galaxian Wars; from that point on, Shiryū feels eternally indebted to him. He also harbors a tender mutual affection for Shunrei, a girl he met during his training, whom he eventually marries and has a son named Ryūhō with in the sequel series Saint Seiya Omega.
Throughout his role in the story, Shiryū undergoes significant development and faces immense challenges. He frequently sacrifices his senses to secure victory for his allies, including blinding himself to defeat Perseus Algol and his Medusa Shield, and later losing his eyesight again in a battle against a General of Poseidon. His journey sees him evolve from a proud young man who relied heavily on his Cloth's physical superiority to a true warrior who understands that power comes from within. He learns to awaken the Seventh Sense, pushing his speed and power beyond human limits, and later the Eighth Sense to invade the Underworld. After defeating Capricorn Shura, he is entrusted with the legendary Excalibur technique, a powerful blade of Cosmo that he integrates into his fighting style. In the later arcs, he inherits the Libra Gold Cloth, succeeding his master Dohko as the Gold Saint of Libra in some continuities.
Shiryū possesses several notable abilities derived from mastering his Cosmo, the energy of the Big Bang within every living being. His signature technique is the Rozan Sho Ryu Ha, or Rising Dragon Punch, an uppercut that releases his destructive Cosmo in the shape of a dragon. While immensely powerful, this technique initially had a critical weakness: for a millisecond during the attack, his heart is left exposed. Another technique is the Rozan Ryu Hi Sho, a powerful thrusting punch. As a Saint, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability. He can project his energy, heal himself, and even survive in the vacuum of space. Combined with the regenerative abilities of his Cloth when repaired by Gold Saint blood, Shiryū remains one of the most formidable and resilient warriors fighting for justice.
