TV-Series
Description
Hubb Lebowski is a former police detective and the ex-husband of scientist Cher Degré, serving as a supporting character in the narrative. Before the events of the story, he and Cher were married and happy together, but their relationship ended in divorce due to Cher becoming increasingly consumed by her research. Despite the separation, Hubb remains deeply in love with her throughout the series and is consistently driven by a desire to protect her and win back her affection, often half-jokingly asking if they still have a chance to reconcile.
In terms of personality, Hubb is generally polite and well-meaning. He took his work as a detective seriously but was never mentally restricted by it, always willing to consider every plausible or implausible lead when trying to solve a case. By his own admission, many of his decisions in life were influenced by others, including his parents, and his pursuit of Cher is the one relationship he takes personal credit for. He is described as a clean-shaven man with short blonde hair who typically wears a grey suit over a dark blue collared shirt and black tie, leading the grizzled hunter Quent Yaiden to mock him as a pretty boy on several occasions. During his journey, he proves to have a strong heart and gains a newfound sense of courage and self, showing a strong resolve by continuing forward even after experiencing devastating personal loss.
Hubb's role in the story begins when he is assigned to question Quent Yaiden after the bounty hunter shoots and injures the wolf Kiba in Freeze City. Quent insists the animal was not a mere dog but a wolf, an idea that Hubb begins to obsess over. He asks Cher about the matter, and she gives him a copy of the banned Book of the Moon, which sets him on the path toward understanding the legend of Paradise. He leaves his job as a detective to search for Cher after she goes missing while tracking the Flower Maiden, Cheza. Along the way, he teams up with Quent, as both are pursuing the same group of wolves from different angles. After being imprisoned and tortured by the Noble Lady Jaguara, he gains a haggard look from which he never fully recovers, though he still refuses to leave Cher's side. He is the only human who travels with Kiba's pack all the way to the door of Paradise.
Key relationships define much of Hubb's journey. His connection with Cher is the emotional core of his character, and his actions are consistently motivated by his love for her. When he is reunited with her in Jaguara's city, he remains with her until the end. His relationship with Quent Yaiden begins with mutual disdain, with Hubb regarding Quent as a rambling drunk and Quent dismissing Hubb as a pretty boy with little integrity. However, after witnessing evidence of the wolves' existence and bonding over their shared goal, they become travel companions and partners, walking the same path even if their ultimate goals differ.
Hubb undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He starts as a man who admits his decisions were rarely his own, but his search for Cher gives him a strong sense of self and purpose. His resolve is tested when he is tortured by Jaguara's forces, yet he persists. The most devastating moment of his development occurs when the vehicle the group is traveling in crashes; Hubb carries Cheza out of the wreckage but watches in horror as the vehicle plunges into a chasm with Cher still inside. He reaches her and tearfully holds her as she dies, lamenting that they did not spend more time together, buy a house, or have children. After her death, he continues forward with the wolves despite his grief, acknowledging that Paradise was not meant for him. As the group climbs the mountain to the entrance of Paradise, he begins to lose his grip. When Kiba tries to save him, Hubb accepts his fate and allows himself to fall. He is mortally wounded at the base of the mountain and, in his final moments, takes a cigar from his coat and inhales the scent from a scarf Cher used to wear before he dies.
Regarding notable abilities, Hubb is an experienced detective with skills in tracking, investigation, and using firearms. He also has a notable physical quirk: he is allergic to canines, and his sneezing often hints at the presence of a wolf nearby. However, the longer he is exposed to the wolves during his journey, the more he develops a resistance to these allergies. He is resourceful and determined, able to survive the harsh conditions of the wasteland and keep pace with the wolves far longer than most humans could.
