Description
Kagura Tennouzu is a central figure in her narrative, introduced as the fifteen-year-old daughter of Shinsen Tennouzu, the powerful head of the Tennouzu Group, a conglomerate with immense influence over Japan's economy. Born in 1990, she lives a life of stark contrasts, confined within the gilded cage of a high skyscraper yet enduring severe mistreatment at the hands of her own mother. This abuse, both physical and emotional, stems from her mother's deep-seated jealousy and resentment, leading to Kagura being starved and deprived of proper nutrition. Her wealthy upbringing has left her with no social skills, and she initially has little understanding of how to interact with the outside world, a vulnerability that others exploit.
Personality-wise, Kagura is depicted as sweet, demure, and remarkably innocent, a quality that persists despite the trauma she endures. She quietly tolerates her mother's cruelty, holding onto a naive hope that she might one day earn genuine affection from her. This core of purity is what captivates others, earning her the title of The Goddess within the secret society of the Roppongi Club. Under hypnosis, she is forced to participate in rituals as this divine figure, where her kiss can trigger a transformative reaction in individuals carrying a specific virus, granting them superhuman powers based on their deepest desires.
Her role in the story is fundamentally that of a catalyst and a captive. Her unique biological factor, which can activate the Euphoria virus, makes her the central object of pursuit for the antagonist Suitengu and his organization. When the protagonist, Tatsumi Saiga, inadvertently stumbles upon one of the club's rituals, Kagura kisses him, awakening his own explosive power and setting the entire plot in motion. Following this event, she begs Saiga to take her away from her gilded prison, and he agrees, leading to their life on the run.
Throughout her flight, Kagura's key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Saiga evolves from that of a rescuer and a damsel to a deep, mutual connection, though their significant age difference is a noted aspect of their relationship. In contrast, Suitengu is her primary manipulator, who uses hypnotic suggestion to control her and exploit her powers for his own schemes. Her relationship with her mother, Shinsen, is purely abusive, yet Kagura still displays a tragic well of sympathy, mourning her mother when she is killed. Her development is a central arc. Initially a passive victim, she endures repeated kidnappings and near-fatal encounters. She also faces the grim reality of a terminal brain tumor, which gives her only six months to live, a condition exacerbated by the drugs and growth inhibitors forced upon her to keep her powers active and her body from maturing.
By the story's climax, Kagura has grown enough to consider sacrificing herself, believing her existence to be the source of everyone's suffering. However, she ultimately chooses to live, encouraged by the protagonist's confession. The conclusion shows her reuniting with Saiga five years later, having survived her illness and now living freely as a young woman, her growth no longer stunted. As a notable ability besides her catalytic properties, she is also shown to own a red 1990 Maserati Shamal, a testament to her family's vast wealth.
