Description
Haruki Hanai is the male class representative of class 2-C. Standing at 182 cm and born on May 5th, he is a tall, black-haired student with a powerful and serious presence. He possesses a remarkably strong sense of moral justice and a stubborn, enthusiastic personality, always striving to do the right thing and acting as a natural-born leader. However, his outspoken and straightforward nature means he often says exactly what is on his mind without considering the consequences, leading to situations where his intensity backfires on him.

In his early childhood, Hanai was depicted as a shy and weak boy who was frequently bullied. This changed due to the influence of his childhood friend, Mikoto Suo, who inspired him to become brave and train in martial arts. He now holds a black belt in Kempo and is a formidable fighter, capable of holding his own against the roughest delinquents.

Hanai’s defining motivation is his hopeless and obsessive love for Yakumo Tsukamoto. He fell in love at first sight upon seeing her sleeping on a school bench. His feelings are so intense and transparent that Yakumo, who possesses the ability to read hearts, can see his emotions from a great distance. Unfortunately, his straightforward and "psychotically obsessive" approach tends to frighten Yakumo, causing her to actively avoid him. This obsession frequently lands him in trouble, most notably with Akira Takano, the president of the Tea Club that Yakumo belongs to. Akira finds Hanai’s personality irritating and mercilessly torments him with sarcasm and pranks, such as forcing him to drink tea laced with hot pepper, ultimately banning him from the club.

Hanai serves as a major supporting character and a direct rival to the protagonist Kenji Harima. Their rivalry stems from a misunderstanding regarding the Tsukamoto surname, as well as their contrasting personalities as a delinquent and a class representative. They frequently clash in physical fights, which often end in draws or are interrupted by chaos, but they also occasionally team up to face common enemies, such as the rival class 2-D. Unlike his unrequited love for Yakumo, Hanai shares a deep, long-standing bond with Mikoto Suo. They train together at his family’s dojo, and she remains his best friend. Throughout the series, their relationship deepens, and in the sequel manga School Rumble Z, it is depicted that they eventually marry and start a family.

In terms of development, Hanai begins as an overly serious and sometimes comically obsessive character whose entire focus is Yakumo. As the series progresses, he gradually matures, learning to channel his intensity more productively. He eventually accepts that his feelings for Yakumo will not be returned and turns his attention toward Mikoto, signifying a major emotional shift from an unattainable fantasy to a stable, mutual relationship.

Hanai is exceptionally talented across multiple disciplines. Academically, he is one of the top students in his grade, consistently achieving high marks. Physically, his martial arts prowess is complemented by athleticism, earning him the nickname "God of Wind" for his achievements in track relay races. He puts maximum effort into everything he does, whether it is cooking, sports, or physical combat. The only notable exception to his proficiency is playing the flute, an instrument he cannot learn to play despite his best efforts.
