Description
Azmaria Hendric is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Chrono Crusade. She is a twelve-year-old girl known as the Apostle of Charity, a title that denotes one of seven holy beings with special powers. Her background is rooted in tragedy and displacement. Born in Fatima, Portugal, on March 12, 1914, she lost her parents during World War I and subsequently immigrated to the United States. As a young child, she experienced a miraculous healing when a divine woman descended from the sky and blessed her, telling her that her song contained a miracle. This event awakened her supernatural ability to heal others through her voice. Following her parents' deaths, Azmaria was fostered by a resentful family who saw her as a financial burden before passing her off to a traveling troupe of performers. While she found happiness and a sense of family with the troupe, this period was short-lived, and she was eventually adopted by a wealthy and cold nobleman named Ricardo Hendric, who sought to exploit her powers for his own selfish purposes, such as reviving his deceased wife. She was rescued from his clutches by the exorcist Rosette Christopher and her demon partner Chrono, after which she was taken into the protective custody of the Magdalene Order.
Azmaria's personality is defined by her quiet, peaceful, and remarkably mature demeanor, which belies her young age. Having been treated as a tool and passed between families who either resented her or sought to use her, she suffers from extremely low self-esteem and a profound lack of self-worth. She is deeply sensitive to the words and feelings of others, often apologizing profusely, with her favorite word being "sorry". This apologetic nature stems from her belief that her powers are a curse, bringing misfortune and tragedy to those close to her, a perception reinforced by the hardships she has endured. Despite this, she is a kind, hardworking, and diligent girl who is always eager to help others, often trying to win favor through her helpfulness. She is genuinely frightened by ghosts. Her core motivation throughout the story is to change herself and overcome her timidity. She looks up to Rosette with immense admiration, viewing her as a mentor and an older sister figure, and she aspires to become as strong, brave, and confident as Rosette one day.
In the story, Azmaria's primary role is that of a protected asset and a source of miraculous healing. As one of the seven Apostles, she is a target for various demonic forces, including the primary antagonist Aion, who requires her power. Her healing ability makes her invaluable to the Magdalene Order. However, her significance goes beyond her utility; her presence serves as a catalyst for character development in others, particularly Rosette and Chrono, who take it upon themselves to help her value herself. Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Rosette is the most significant, as Rosette’s unwavering confidence and directness provide a model for Azmaria to aspire to. Despite Chrono being a demon, Azmaria forms a close friendship with him, accepting him without fear or prejudice. She is also cared for by other members of the Order, such as Father Remington and Sister Kate. Her relationship with her adoptive father, Ricardo Hendric, is one of exploitation and imprisonment, while her connection with the demon Viscount Lerajie, who was assigned to be her enforcer, is one of captivity.
Azmaria undergoes notable development, transitioning from a fearful and submissive girl who sees herself as a liability to a more resolute individual determined to help her friends. A turning point occurs when she willingly agrees to go with her captor to save Chrono and Rosette, demonstrating her growing courage and selflessness. After being rescued, she dedicates herself to being helpful around the Order and supporting her companions. In the anime's conclusion, after the deaths of Rosette and Chrono, a grown-up Azmaria is shown honoring their memory, having matured but still carrying their influence with her. In the manga, her future is more extensively detailed; she eventually loses her apostolic powers as she enters adulthood, and it is suggested she marries Joshua Christopher, Rosette's brother. She goes on to establish the Hendric Foundation, which endures for generations.
Azmaria's most notable ability is her miraculous singing voice. As the Apostle of Charity, she possesses a beautiful soprano that has the power to heal the wounds and illnesses of others when she sings. This power is visually represented by the manifestation of angelic wings and a soft, shining light that emanates from her. Her ability is not limitless; using it on a large scale or for extended periods greatly exhausts her. In addition to healing, her powers are connected to manipulating astral lines, a fundamental energy source in the series' cosmology. After a major battle on a blimp, she temporarily loses her ability to use her powers. She holds a deep-seated ambivalence towards this gift, believing it to be the source of the misfortune that has plagued her life, which is why she often denies having any special ability and initially refrains from using it.
