TV-Series
Description
Edward Hamilton, almost universally referred to by his nickname Elder, is a supporting character who serves as a scientist for the Order of Magdalene, specifically heading its weapons development department. He is the inventor behind many of the specialized armaments used by the Order's exorcists, including the experimental Gospel bullet and the torch carried by sister Rosette Christopher. His physical appearance is that of a short, elderly man with white hair, a goatee, and glasses. He stands at 149 centimeters tall.

Elder possesses a personality that is both a source of comedy and a mask for deeper sincerity. On the surface, he is notorious within the convent for his lecherous behavior, which includes acts such as attempting to sneak into the women's bath or stealing the nuns' undergarments. He often teases Rosette, making inappropriate comments that quickly provoke her ire and result in physical retaliation. Despite this perverse and annoying exterior, Elder is an exceptionally capable and brilliant inventor whose creations are vital to the Order's missions. Underneath his humorous faults, he genuinely cares for the young members of the Order, viewing them almost as family. His teasing of Rosette belies a deep, paternal concern for her well-being and that of her partner, the demon Chrono.

Elder's motivations are rooted in a combination of professional duty and personal history. As the head of weapons development, he is dedicated to providing the tools necessary to fight demons. More personally, he is driven by his past experiences, particularly his relationship with a previous apostle named Mary Magdalene. It was Elder who brought Magdalena to the Order decades before the main story and who gave her that name, acting as a father figure to her. This history makes him determined to prevent Chrono from repeating past tragedies, as he witnessed the consequences of Chrono's actions with Magdalena firsthand. He became involved in the search for Magdalena when she was taken and worked alongside a young Ewan Remington to find her.

In the story, Elder's primary role is that of a support and logistical expert for the main characters, particularly Rosette and Chrono. He provides them with weapons and information from the Order's headquarters. However, his role expands as the narrative escalates. He is present for key historical events, including the fall of Magdalena and Chrono from Eden. He was also present when Chrono went berserk in San Francisco, and when the Order's council voted to execute Chrono for the resulting destruction, Elder voted against the decision. In the final battle, he was aboard a ship tasked with coordinating the apostle Metatron. After the conflict, he survived and took on the responsibility of mentoring the next generation of developers for the Order.

Key relationships define Elder's character. He shares a close, paternal bond with Rosette, often acting as a mischievous but caring uncle figure. With Chrono, his dynamic is more complex; he is wary due to the past but ultimately cares for the demon and hopes to guide him toward a better path. He has a long-standing history with his colleague Ewan Remington, having worked with him for decades, including during the incident with Mary Magdalene, and later supporting Remington after he underwent a dangerous transplant procedure. The most significant relationship is with Mary Magdalene, for whom he served as a foster father and protector.

Throughout the series, Edward does not undergo a dramatic personality transformation, but his past and his wisdom become increasingly prominent as the stakes rise. His development is shown through the revelation of his long history with the Order and his deep-seated desire to protect the new generation from the pain he witnessed in the past. His most notable abilities lie not in combat but in his genius for invention and engineering. He is responsible for creating the specialized ordinance used by the Order's exorcists, and his technical expertise is considered indispensable in the fight against demonic forces.
