Description
Masaru Kato is a high school student and one of the two main protagonists of Gantz. He first appears alongside his childhood friend Kei Kurono after both die in a subway accident while trying to help an unconscious drunk man who had fallen onto the tracks. He is 17 years old and stands 192 cm tall. His parents are deceased, leaving him responsible for his younger brother, whom he protects fiercely. Initially, he lives with an aunt who reluctantly took them in, but he later moves out to rent an apartment for himself and his brother after tensions arise.
Kato is characterized by his strong sense of altruism and deep compassion for others. He naturally assumes a leadership role, often taking charge of situations due to his authoritative presence and moral compass. However, he is deeply reluctant to hurt others, which significantly hinders his effectiveness in the brutal missions assigned by Gantz. His primary motivation is to protect his brother and his friends, and he strives to navigate the deadly game without compromising his values. He believes in helping those in need, even when it puts his own life at risk.
In the story, Kato serves as the secondary protagonist during Phase 1 and becomes one of the primary protagonists in Phase 2. He is killed during the Rateiin temple mission but is later resurrected by Yoshikazu Suzuki using the points earned after the Oni Alien mission. His resurrection serves as a turning point, allowing him to reflect on his actions and further develop his leadership abilities. He eventually defeats the powerful alien Nurarihyon and gains 100 points, which he uses to revive Kurono. Throughout the series, his role evolves from a reluctant participant to a more confident and strategic leader.
Kato shares a deep bond with Kei Kurono, his childhood friend, whose contrasting personality and views on life and death create a dynamic tension between them. His relationship with his younger brother is the driving force behind his actions, underscoring his protective instincts. He also develops camaraderie with other Gantz team members as they face the horrors of their missions together.
As a Gantz participant, Kato has access to standard equipment: a black bodysuit that enhances physical abilities, a Gantz weapon, and brief invulnerability during missions. His combat skills become more refined over time, but his greatest limitation remains his unwillingness to inflict harm. He compensates by developing strategic, non-lethal approaches to confrontations whenever possible. His growth is marked by a deeper understanding of the moral complexities of the game and a strengthened resolve to protect others without abandoning his principles.
