TV-Series
Description
NieA is an alien girl who occupies the lowest rung of her species' social hierarchy, classified as an under-seven because she lacks the antennae that other aliens possess. She arrives on Earth and takes up residence in the closet of Mayuko Chigasaki, a poor student living above a bathhouse in the sleepy town of Enohana. Without any visible means of support, NieA acts as a freeloader, helping herself to Mayuko's food and living space with little regard for the burden this places on her already struggling host.

Her personality is marked by a carefree, impulsive, and often irresponsible demeanor. She shows little concern for the consequences of her actions, which repeatedly brings her into conflict with the hardworking and anxious Mayuko. NieA is prone to mischief and seems to live entirely in the present moment, driven by her immediate wants and whims rather than any long-term plan. Despite her lazy and selfish behavior, she possesses a cheerful disposition and does not seem to dwell on her own low status. When other aliens or humans insult her by calling her a stupid no-antenna, she is quick to accuse them of discrimination, showing that she is aware of her social position and sensitive to the prejudice directed at her.

NieA's primary motivation appears to be survival and comfort in the simplest terms: she seeks food, shelter, and amusement. She does not strive for social advancement or display any deep ambition. One of her notable pastimes is building spaceships out of discarded junk, a hobby that reflects an inherent mechanical aptitude and a connection to her alien origins. Despite lacking antennae, she is able to receive signals from the alien mothership, an ability that most other aliens in Enohana do not possess, suggesting hidden or overlooked capabilities.

Her role in the story is that of a chaotic, disruptive presence in Mayuko's otherwise orderly but impoverished life. The pair form an odd-couple dynamic: Mayuko works diligently at multiple part-time jobs and attends cram school, while NieA lounges, eats, and causes trouble. Their relationship is the central axis of the series, revolving around daily arguments over money, food, and responsibility. Over the course of the series, their coexistence evolves from a tense arrangement into a deeper bond, though NieA never fully abandons her freewheeling ways. Her interactions with other characters, including the alien shopkeeper Chada and the ufology enthusiast Chiaki, further highlight her status as an outsider among both humans and her own kind. NieA does not undergo a dramatic transformation, but her presence gently challenges Mayuko's rigid outlook and underscores the series' quiet themes of alienation, discrimination, and finding connection across differences.
