Description
Isao Ohta is a pilot of the AV-98 Ingram Unit 2, belonging to the Second Platoon of the Special Vehicle Section 2. He was born in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. Prior to joining the Special Vehicle Section, Ohta served in the Police Mobile Unit, where he became frustrated with how slowly the unit responded to the rise in Labor-related crimes. This frustration motivated him to request a transfer to the then-short-staffed Second Unit.
Ohta has a straightforward and just personality, with a strong sense of duty and a love for justice. He is a disciplined individual who values the hierarchy of police work, but his dedication often leads to trouble. He is best known for being extremely brash, hot-tempered, and reckless. His most defining trait is his obsession with firearms; he has a habit of immediately resorting to his patrol Labor's revolver cannon during any dispatch, a tendency that has earned him nicknames such as the Berserker of Justice and the Mad Policeman. His behavior is so extreme that he has single-handedly built the notorious reputation of the Second Platoon.
Despite his aggressive and often thoughtless exterior, Ohta is a good and honest police officer who is fully committed to his work. His hobby appears to be his job, and he has a personal collection of model guns that he polishes diligently. His passion for firearms extends to coveting any weapon with tremendous firepower, such as large cannons or military-grade gatling guns.
In the story, Ohta serves as the pilot of the second Ingram unit, often acting as a foil to the more level-headed Noa Izumi, who pilots Unit 1. While Izumi tends to avoid gunfights to prevent collateral damage, Ohta's solution to most problems involves overwhelming force, which frequently results in his own machine being destroyed or causing significant damage to its surroundings. This has led his colleagues to see him as a loose cannon who requires a tight leash. Among the key relationships in his life, Ohta frequently argues with Asuma Shinohara, his colleague and the commander of Unit 1, who rarely tolerates his reckless behavior. His partner and carrier driver is Mikiyasu Shinshi, the lone married man of the platoon. Ohta often teases Shinshi about his marriage, while Shinshi, in turn, has developed stomach problems due to the stress of working with Ohta. Due to Ohta's volatile nature, his superiors have assigned him a series of handlers to keep him in check, including Kanuka Clancy and later Takeo Kumagami, who serve as his backup. His direct superior, Captain Kiichi Goto, is often exasperated by his behavior, having lost his temper at Ohta's accidents on more than one occasion.
Ohta's development throughout the series is minimal, as he largely remains a static and comedic character. However, his role often involves learning the limits of his aggressive approach, though these lessons rarely stick for long. He is shown to be particularly sensitive to criticism regarding his trustworthiness, and his actions are sometimes curbed by the clever ploys of Captain Goto.
Regarding abilities, Ohta is considered one of the best Labor pilots in the force. While he is extremely gun-happy and prone to missing his targets or causing collateral damage in the heat of real combat, his accuracy on a calm, static firing range is essentially perfect. He demonstrates phenomenal shooting ability in training, capable of placing six bullets in the center of a target or accurately shooting a bomb out of the air with an Ingram's finger. His piloting style is rough and forceful, which results in constant damage to his personal Unit 2, leading to its frequent and costly repairs. He has even personally customized his Ingram unit.
