Movie
Description
Merle is a cat-girl character in the film Escaflowne: The Movie, a re-telling of the television series. She is an orphan who was taken in by the royal family of Fanelia, becoming the childhood friend and constant companion of Van Slanzar de Fanel. Having been with Van through the destruction of his kingdom and the loss of his family, she is one of the few people who has seen his Draconian wings and is fiercely devoted to him. Her background as a solitary survivor shapes her intense loyalty and protective instincts.

In the movie, Merle’s personality is fiery, spunky, and hyperactive. She is openly affectionate toward Van and often acts as his guardian, always placing herself between him and danger. This protective role is more pronounced in the film than in the series; she is less controlling and more focused on shielding Van from harm. Her initial reaction to the arrival of Hitomi Kanzaki is jealousy and wariness, as she fears that the newcomer will take Van away from her. This jealousy manifests in defensive and sometimes sharp behavior toward Hitomi.

Merle’s primary motivation is to safeguard Van and remain at his side. She has no grand ambitions beyond his well-being and happiness. As the story progresses, she begins to see past her jealousy and comes to accept Hitomi, eventually encouraging Van to pursue his feelings for her. This development marks a maturing of her character, as she learns to trust Hitomi and recognizes that Van’s happiness may be found beyond their exclusive bond.

Her role in the narrative is that of a supportive companion and emotional anchor for Van. She provides moments of levity with her energetic antics but is also a source of fierce loyalty in battle. Her key relationships are with Van and Hitomi; she grows from a rival for Van’s attention to a loyal friend to Hitomi. The bond between Merle and Van is built on years of shared hardship and mutual reliance.

Merle’s notable abilities stem from her cat-girl nature, granting her agility, quick reflexes, and physical strength. She is capable of leaping great distances, moving with feline grace, and using her claws in combat. While not a primary warrior, she is willing to fight when necessary and has shown bravery in protecting Van, even putting her own life at risk. Her other traits include a sharp wit and a tendency to provide comic relief, but these do not undermine her sincere dedication to those she loves.
