Description
Anko Uehara is a student at Holy Forest Academy and a member of Class 3-4, the notoriously difficult homeroom class assigned to the protagonist. She is the daughter of the Parent-Teacher Association president, a position that affords her a degree of privilege and influence within the school. Anko is typically depicted with long brown hair, which she often wears loose with the sides gathered into twin tails secured by red hair ties, and she has brown eyes. She is described as an athletic girl of average height for her age.
At the outset of the story, Anko's personality is characterized by being brash, rude, and spoiled. She frequently abuses her parents' status to avoid consequences for her actions. Her primary role in the early narrative is that of an antagonist, where she leads a trio of girls, including Naoko Asano and Mayuko Izumi, in the severe bullying of their classmate Noboru Yoshikawa. This harassment is relentless and violent, driving Yoshikawa to attempt suicide on two occasions. Her motivation for this cruelty is rooted in her own traumatic past; she was once a victim of bullying at the hands of her older brother, Yuichi Uehara. After witnessing their father severely scold her brother for poor grades, Yuichi took out his frustrations on Anko, going so far as to snap the neck of her doll. This experience fostered a deep-seated hatred within Anko for those she perceives as weak, a hatred she projects onto Yoshikawa.
Anko's trajectory in the story is defined by her conflict and eventual reconciliation with Eikichi Onizuka and Noboru Yoshikawa. After one particularly brutal assault on Yoshikawa, Onizuka intervenes by confronting Anko and her friends at a karaoke bar, where he humiliates them as a form of retribution. In response, Anko uses her mother's authority to try to have Onizuka fired, a plot that ultimately fails and results in her mother's resignation from the PTA and a tearful confrontation between mother and daughter about their relationship and expectations. Following this, while Anko remains verbally supportive of schemes against Onizuka, she largely ceases her active attempts to have him dismissed. Her perspective shifts further when another student, Miyabi Aizawa, frames Onizuka for embezzlement; Anko considers this plot to be excessive and even offers Onizuka her credit card to help him, signaling her growing allegiance to him.
The most significant change in Anko occurs during a class trip to Okinawa. While attempting to bully Yoshikawa by abandoning him on a deserted part of the island, she and her friends become lost and Anko falls into a cavern, where she is repeatedly saved by Yoshikawa. This experience, combined with a near-death dream that revisits the childhood trauma inflicted by her brother, causes her to develop romantic feelings for Yoshikawa. Anko initially struggles to admit these feelings, ashamed of being attracted to someone she had long considered weak, but with Onizuka's encouragement, she eventually accepts her crush. Her relationship with Yoshikawa continues to develop, most notably during a summer festival where she and Yoshikawa encounter her childhood friend, and Yoshikawa's confidence helps Anko fully acknowledge him. By the end of the series, she has largely dropped her brash attitude, particularly around Yoshikawa.
In terms of abilities, beyond her athleticism, Anko is noted to have physical strength, claiming she had to learn to beat up a few guys while growing up. Her family background also gives her a notable ability to manipulate social and institutional systems to her advantage, though this is a trait she eventually moves away from.
