Description
Ayato Kamina is the protagonist of the story, introduced as a seventeen-year-old student living in Tokyo who is dedicated to his art, frequently painting an image of a girl on a cliff facing the sea. He possesses mysterious, rune-like birthmarks on his body, which are later revealed to be a sign that he is an "Ollin," a person with the potential to become the instrumentalist for a giant, god-like entity known as the RahXephon. His life in Tokyo is an artificial construct, as the city is encased within a dimensional barrier called Tokyo Jupiter, where time flows much slower than in the outside world. He is initially unaware of his true nature as a Mulian, a member of the species that created the barrier, and has had his memories altered by his adoptive mother, Maya Kamina, to remove specific past relationships and control him.

Ayato’s personality is complex, shaped by constant deception and the abrupt shattering of his reality. Initially, he comes across as a fairly ordinary, somewhat introverted teenager, but he is thrust into extraordinary circumstances that force him to confront deep existential questions. He struggles significantly with issues of trust, especially regarding adults and authority figures, reacting to manipulation and secrecy with open hostility and visible distress. Forced to leave his home, he grapples with a profound sense of displacement, feeling like a freak or an outcast because of his origins. He is prone to overreacting when confronted with difficult truths and often tries to refuse the call to pilot the RahXephon, insisting he does not want to fight. Despite his angst and immaturity, he has a deep-seated desire for honesty and acceptance. When treated with respect and kindness, he reveals a caring and good-natured core, and he is fundamentally driven to protect those close to him. His central motivation throughout the story is the search for his own identity and the truth about who he is, whether he is human or Mulian, and where he truly belongs.

His role in the story is that of the chosen pilot for the RahXephon, a destiny he did not ask for but cannot escape. He is taken from Tokyo Jupiter by the organization TERRA and becomes a key asset in their fight against the Mulian Dolems, giant creatures that attack the world outside the barrier. His journey involves learning to pilot the RahXephon while simultaneously trying to piece together his fragmented past and understand his purpose. As the narrative progresses, Ayato undergoes significant development, maturing from a confused and reluctant boy into a determined individual who accepts his role. He eventually comes to terms with his dual heritage, choosing to protect his friends and loved ones regardless of his origin. In the climax, he fuses completely with the RahXephon and Ixtli, the entity within it, to become the "True RahXephon," a being with the power to retune the world.

Ayato’s key relationships are central to his development. The most significant is with Haruka Shitow, a TERRA officer who was his childhood friend and first love before his memories were altered. Their reunion is complicated by the twelve-year age gap caused by Tokyo Jupiter, but they ultimately fall in love again, and their bond becomes the emotional core of the story. He also lives with Haruka's younger sister, Megumi, and her uncle, Rikudo Shougo, who provides him with a sense of family and normalcy. His relationships with his biological mother, Quon Kisaragi, and his adoptive mother, Maya, are fraught with manipulation and revelation, as they are instrumental in the plans for him to tune the world. He also forms complicated bonds with others on the base, such as Itsuki Kisaragi, who is revealed to be his twin brother, and Elvy Hadhiyat, a pilot who initially distrusts him. His interactions with the mysterious Reika Mishima, who resembles the girl in his painting, ultimately lead him to the truth about the RahXephon and his own destiny.

As the pilot of the RahXephon, Ayato’s notable abilities are intrinsically linked to the mecha itself. As an Ollin, he is the only one who can synchronize with and control the giant god. The RahXephon is capable of powerful attacks that manifest as songs and can create energy barriers, beams, and shockwaves. As Ayato matures and accepts his identity, his power grows, culminating in his fusion with the RahXephon. In this final, ascended state, he gains the ultimate ability to retune reality itself, using the "Song of Re-tuning" to destroy the old world and create a new one where the dimensional split and the existence of Tokyo Jupiter never happened.
