Description
Juna Ariyoshi is a tenth-grade Japanese schoolgirl who lives an ordinary life until a fatal motorcycle accident fundamentally changes her existence. While traveling with her boyfriend, Tokio Oshima, Juna dies in a crash. In the moment of her death, her spirit rises from her body, and she is granted a vision of a dying Earth ravaged by destructive forces. A powerful entity named Chris Hawken appears before her and offers to restore her to life on one condition: she must agree to protect the planet. Juna accepts this offer and is resurrected as the Avatar of Time, entrusted with the immense responsibility of saving the world.

Before her death, Juna is portrayed as a fairly typical teenager who possesses a childlike curiosity and a strong, genuine admiration for nature. However, she is also inexperienced and has never been forced to confront the deeper consequences of her actions or the modern world around her. After becoming the Avatar of Time, she remains an ordinary adolescent girl at heart, struggling to reconcile her new, world-saving duties with the everyday anxieties of high school life, her family relationships with her mother and sister, and her romantic feelings for Tokio. She is often unsure of how she is supposed to help the planet and has difficulty understanding her own purpose, making her a reluctant and often confused hero. Her personal life becomes a source of great distress, as she finds herself unable to decipher Tokio's true thoughts and feelings, while he similarly fails to understand her own.

Juna's central motivation is initially driven by a desire to protect those she cares about and to fulfill the duty she has been given. However, her understanding of this duty evolves considerably. At first, she believes her role is to fight and destroy the Raaja, the worm-like creatures born from the toxic pollution that represents the wound humanity has inflicted upon the Earth. Chris repeatedly challenges this violent approach, amonishing her with the question, Why do you kill?, and clarifying that he never asked her to destroy. This philosophical conflict forms the core of her journey. Over the course of the series, she must move beyond her initial fear and confusion to seek answers to profound questions about how science and technology have severed humanity's primal and instinctive connections with nature. Her ultimate goal becomes not simply to defeat an enemy, but to understand the true meaning of becoming one with the target, a phrase she repeats throughout the series and only fully comprehends at its end.

Throughout her journey, Juna is supported and challenged by several key relationships. Chris Hawken, who appears in the body of a frail, young boy, is her enigmatic mentor. He is unfailingly kind and patient, speaking telepathically and guiding Juna toward a non-violent understanding of her powers, even as his own body weakens. Acting as Chris's intermediary is Cindy Klein, a young, telepathic orphan who is fiercely devoted to him. Cindy often appears cold and rude toward Juna, partly out of protectiveness for Chris and partly from her own psychological trauma of reading others' thoughts, creating a tense dynamic between the two. Juna's boyfriend, Tokio Oshima, is the most important person in her personal life. He is a stereotypical teenager, obsessed with video games and fast food, who is deeply worried for Juna's safety. However, he has a distorted view of love and often fails to understand Juna's feelings and experiences. Their relationship is strained by her transformation, as their thoughts and emotions repeatedly fail to reach each other, causing both of them significant pain. She also interacts with SEED, a powerful international organization that monitors environmental disasters and confronts the Raaja, but the organization's goals do not always align perfectly with her own evolving understanding.

Juna undergoes significant development, transforming from a scared and uncertain girl into a more decisive and enlightened individual. A key part of her growth involves learning to master her unique abilities. Her powers are signified by a magatama bead embedded in her forehead, which symbolizes her connection to the Earth and her role as the Avatar of Time. Her most notable ability is the power to summon the Holy Bow Gandiva, a powerful weapon that appears when she has confidence and concentration but vanishes when she is gripped by fear. She can also call upon Ashura, a many-armed mechanical guardian known as the Protector of Time, to fight the Raaja on her behalf when her own skills are insufficient. As she develops, she gains the ability to see the Raaja and other normally invisible phenomena, to resonate with the world around her, and even to perceive the unspoken thoughts of other people, a power that initially only adds to her confusion. Her journey culminates in a final confrontation where she must face Chris himself and use her power not to destroy, but to purify and save. Through this ordeal, she finally awakens her full power, realizing the true meaning of her mission and achieving a deeper understanding of life and her connection to all things.
