Description
Larva is a Western Shinma, a supernatural being from the western world, who initially came to Japan with the mission of killing Miyu before her vampiric nature could fully awaken. In both the original video animation and the television series, his encounter with Miyu ends differently than intended: when he tries to strike her down, his touch instead awakens her vampiric powers, and she drinks his blood. In doing so, she binds him to her with a blood bond, replacing his blood with her own. This act transforms the would‑be assassin into her eternal servant and protector.
Larva’s personality is defined by unwavering loyalty and a quiet, melancholic devotion. In the OVA, his failure is portrayed as so shameful that he becomes mute and conceals his face behind a mask. In the television series, he can speak and occasionally removes his mask, but he still carries a solemn, reserved demeanor, rarely expressing emotion openly. His motivations are rooted in the bond he shares with Miyu: having glimpsed her sorrow during the blood bonding, he chooses to remain by her side. He believes that once all stray Shinma have been returned to the darkness, he and Miyu may finally find peace together.
Larva’s role in the story is that of Miyu’s companion, friend, and most trusted ally. He accompanies her on her mission as the Guardian, helping her hunt and defeat stray Shinma who have escaped their realm. He is extremely powerful in combat, often defeating enemies without sustaining serious injury. His primary weapons are his long, sharp nails, which can tear through nearly anything, and in the television series he also wields a scythe.
His key relationship is with Miyu, the vampire princess he serves. Their connection is both supernatural and emotional; he understands her loneliness because he shares her outsider status. In the manga and other media, other Shinma such as Lemures and Carlua have ties to him, but those relationships are secondary to his bond with Miyu. Throughout the story, Larva develops from an enemy who sought to destroy the Guardian into a devoted protector who will fight for her and no one else.
Larva’s notable abilities include superhuman strength and agility, the power to slash with his claws, and proficiency with a scythe in the television adaptation. He is a formidable fighter who rarely loses a battle. His appearance is distinctive: a tall, cloaked figure with red eyes, short bluish hair, and a volto‑style mask that covers his face in the OVA. His name is derived from Roman mythology, where the Larva (or Larvae) were malevolent ghosts, fitting his origins as a terrifying Western Shinma who eventually becomes a guardian of compassion.
