OVA
Description
Nancy Makuhari, known by her code name Miss Deep, is a 26-year-old agent working for the British Library's Special Operations Division. She was originally a Japanese national who studied at Cambridge University, later joined the British police force, and was subsequently recruited into the Library's elite Section A force. In some versions of the story, she manages an antique shop in Australia between missions.

Her most notable ability is phasing, also called diving, which allows her to become intangible and pass through solid objects at will. She can also selectively phase parts of her body, such as reaching through a wall or allowing bullets to pass harmlessly through her. This power requires quick thinking and concentration; a mistake could leave her stuck inside an object or fatally injured. In combat, she supplements her phasing with skilled hand-to-hand martial arts and the use of a Glock 18 automatic pistol. She can also use her phasing in a lethal manner by solidifying her hand inside an opponent's body.

Nancy is a clone of the historical spy Mata Hari, created by the villain Ikkyu. She initially took the identity of the real Nancy Makuhari, an agent who was hospitalized shortly before the events of the story. She works as a double agent, ostensibly loyal to the British Library while secretly serving the I-Jin organization under Ikkyu. However, her growing friendship with the paper-manipulating agent Yomiko Readman causes her to question Ikkyu's plan to wipe out humanity, and she ultimately turns against him.

Personality-wise, Nancy presents herself as a slick, suave, and businesslike operative. She dislikes her codename because it makes her sound like a porn star. She initially clashes with Yomiko, viewing her as naive, but over time develops a sisterly bond with her, teasing Yomiko while also looking out for her. She is a woman of conflicting loyalties, torn between her mission for Ikkyu and her genuine feelings for Yomiko and her own conscience. She is also romantically involved with Ikkyu, which complicates her motives.

In the original OVA, Nancy's role is that of a conflicted antagonist-turned-ally. She helps Yomiko recover a stolen book and later confronts Ikkyu directly. After Ikkyu creates a second, more loyal clone of Mata Hari, Nancy fights her duplicate and ultimately sacrifices herself, riding to her death on Ikkyu's rocket. A brain-damaged second clone survives, appearing at the end of the OVA with no memory of past events.

In the television series R.O.D the TV, Nancy appears as a supporting character with a drastically altered personality due to oxygen deprivation suffered during the OVA climax. She is now childlike and innocent, living under Yomiko's protection, though traces of her former self occasionally resurface.

Physically, Nancy is tall with long, dark blue hair and reddish-brown or magenta eyes. She possesses a very prominent bust, often cited as a notable aspect of her design. Her combat outfit is a skintight black jumpsuit that leaves the upper chest exposed, paired with gloves, boots, and belts. When not on mission, she wears various disguises.
