Description
Hokuto Sumeragi is the twin sister of Subaru Sumeragi, the thirteenth head of the powerful Sumeragi clan of onmyōji, or spirit mediums. Born in Kyoto on February 18, 1974, she is the elder twin, having been born just before midnight. While her brother carries the heavy responsibilities of their ancient lineage, Hokuto lives a comparatively normal life as a high school student, yet she is inextricably linked to every aspect of Subaru’s world.

In personality, Hokuto is the radiant and boisterous opposite of her more reserved and gentle-natured twin. She is described as eccentric, bold, impulsive, and quick-witted, with a flair for the dramatic. Her laughter is loud and distinctive, and she approaches life with an energy that can be overwhelming but never malicious. Though she often teases her brother mercilessly, sometimes imagining outlandish romantic scenarios for him, this behavior stems from a deep and abiding love. She is fiercely protective of Subaru’s tender heart, acutely aware of the crushing weight he carries as a clan leader at such a young age. Hokuto believes that love is the most important force in life, a conviction that drives her actions more than any formal duty to her clan. Her stated personal aspiration is to become an excellent housewife, a goal that reflects her focus on creating a warm and stable home life.

Hokuto’s primary role within Tokyo Babylon is that of Subaru’s caretaker, protector, and emotional anchor. After the twins move to Tokyo to live independently from their grandmother, Hokuto takes charge of all domestic responsibilities, including cooking, cleaning, and designing the elaborate and often outrageous matching outfits that both she and Subaru wear in public. Her wardrobe is famously eclectic, colorful, and ever-changing, a visual expression of her exuberant personality. More than just a homemaker, Hokuto is the person who most understands the two most important figures in her brother’s life: Subaru himself and the charming veterinarian Seishiro Sakurazuka. She is often the one who pushes the reserved Subaru to confront his growing feelings for Seishiro, using humor and teasing to mask her serious intent. She affectionately nicknames Seishiro "Sei-chan" and actively encourages his pursuit of her brother, believing him to be the only person capable of truly reaching Subaru’s heart.

This decision is complex, however, as Hokuto is far more perceptive than she lets on. She is fully aware that Seishiro is the heir to the Sakurazukamori, a clan of assassin onmyōji who are the Sumeragi’s mortal enemies. Despite knowing the profound danger he represents, she gambles on the possibility of love, hoping that a genuine bond with Subaru could redeem him. Her relationship with Seishiro is therefore a tense and knowing dance; she alone among the trio seems to truly grasp the stakes of the dangerous game they are playing. Hokuto is also known to have had a connection to the Dream Seer, Kakyou Kuzuki, whom she could visit in his dreams, a feat very few could accomplish.

Regarding her abilities, Hokuto does not possess the immense offensive power or innate spiritual strength of her brother. She is, however, a capable practitioner of defensive magic and other unique spells. Her expertise is not in grand exorcisms but in subtle, clever, and often improvised enchantments. She is frequently seen with a cosmetics kit, and her favorite tool is a red lipstick, which she uses to draw protective symbols and perform her magic. Her most significant and powerful act of magic is not a skill she uses in daily life, but a final, desperate measure.

Over the course of the story, Hokuto’s character arc moves from a playful supporter to a tragic catalyst. As Seishiro’s dark nature is fully revealed and he brutally shatters Subaru’s heart, leaving him catatonic with grief, Hokuto is consumed by guilt. She blames herself for encouraging the romance that led to her brother’s destruction. To atone and to provide a future for Subaru, she takes decisive action. She dons Subaru’s ceremonial robes and confronts Seishiro, asking him to kill her. As she dies, she activates a powerful curse specifically designed to protect Subaru. The spell is conditional: if Seishiro ever attempts to kill Subaru using the same method he used to kill her, the fatal power of the attack will rebound and destroy Seishiro instead. In this act, Hokuto reframes her own murder into a lasting, protective barrier around her twin. Her death is the pivotal tragedy that transforms Subaru’s sorrow into a vow for revenge, and her spell becomes the ultimate arbiter of the fateful bond between Subaru and Seishiro in the subsequent series, X. Though she dies, her presence is never forgotten; her voice and her wisdom continue to guide Subaru from his memories, making her the silent but driving force behind the story's central tragedy.
