Description
Matagu Shido is a supporting character in the anime series Please Teacher!. He is a high school student known for his serious disposition and strong interest in astronomy, which aligns with his portrayal as a classic intellectual or nerd within the friend group. He is often regarded as the most academically focused and serious-minded member of the circle of friends that includes Kei Kusanagi, Hyosuke Magumo, and others.

His background is that of a typical student, but his personality is marked by a notable lack of confidence and self-assurance, especially in social and romantic situations. He is much shyer and more reserved than his friends Hyosuke and Kei, to the point where this shyness becomes a defining characteristic. His primary motivation stems from a deep-seated dream to encounter an alien being from outer space, a fascination that drives his interest in astronomy. Ironically, he is completely unaware that his teacher, Mizuho Kazami, is an extraterrestrial, and he has had several ordinary conversations with her, missing the opportunity to realize that his dream has already been fulfilled.

In the story, Matagu serves as a member of the close-knit group that supports the main protagonist, Kei. His role often highlights the contrast between his studious, introverted nature and the more outgoing personalities of his friends. He develops a romantic crush on Mizuho, and at one point he considers confessing his feelings to her, but his extreme shyness prevents him from following through. Throughout the series, he does not experience significant personal growth in his romantic pursuits, remaining without a girlfriend by the end of the narrative.

Key relationships include his friendship with Kei and Hyosuke, who are part of his daily social circle. He is also the older brother of Haruko Shido, though this relationship is not a major focus of the story. His notable abilities are primarily intellectual; he is considered the smartest member of his friend group, and his knowledge of astronomy reflects his dedicated academic interests. However, he does not possess any special physical or supernatural talents. His character development is limited, as he remains consistently shy and romantically unsuccessful throughout the series, serving more as a comedic and relatable figure than a character who undergoes major transformation.
