Description
Athena Areios is the political leader of the utopian city-state of Olympus, typically holding the title of Prime Minister or Administrator depending on the adaptation. She is a first-generation Bioroid, an artificial human manufactured to be biologically perfect, possessing superior intelligence and physical symmetry. What sets her apart from later Bioroid models is her complete emotional freedom; while subsequent generations were given constraints to pacify them, Athena has the full range of human emotions and none of those limitations, making her a unique and formidable individual.

In terms of personality, Athena is characterized by her shrewdness, wisdom, and a distinct fearlessness. She is a fiery and cunning negotiator who is not afraid to use aggressive tactics, including calculated scare tactics, to persuade her own government or international coalitions during summits. Her leadership style is pragmatic and decisive, often prioritizing the greater good and the stability of Olympus over individual concerns. Her motivations are deeply tied to her origin and her role. As a Bioroid, one of her primary intents is to regulate the instability of human-run governments and promote worldwide peace and integration campaigns. On a more personal level, she is driven by her relationship with her creator, Dr. Gilliam Knute, who is also the mother of the series protagonist, Deunan Knute. Athena worked closely with Gilliam and even acted as a caretaker for the young Deunan. This connection fuels a personal mission to locate Deunan, both out of honor to her creator and because Deunan possesses vital genetic information, the "Appleseed" data, that is key to the survival of the Bioroid race.

Athena's role in the story is primarily that of a strategic leader and a guiding force from Olympus's highest office. She is the one who often sets the overarching objectives for the special forces unit E.S.W.A.T., recognizing the need for exceptional human soldiers like Deunan Knute. She was responsible for orchestrating the circumstances that led to Deunan being brought to Olympus, arranging a cyborg attack on Deunan's unit to force an E.S.W.A.T. intervention and rescue before the Olympus Regular Army could capture her. Her key relationships are pivotal to her character. Her bond with her assistant and Chief of Staff, Nike, a second-generation Bioroid, is one of constant support and loyalty. Her dynamic with Deunan is complex, blending the remnants of a maternal or mentoring connection from Deunan's childhood with the necessity of using her for the state's and Bioroids' survival. She also operates under the watchful eyes of the city's ruling council of elders and faces open opposition from military figures like General Uranus, who distrust Bioroids.

Regarding development, Athena's portrayal shifts across different versions of the story. In the original manga, she is an administrative director focused on financial and civic affairs like taxation. In the 2004 film and its sequel, Ex Machina, she is the undisputed Prime Minister and later Administrator, representing the sole political authority in Olympus. A significant development in the 2004 anime interpretation is the expansion of her backstory, explicitly linking her creation to Deunan's mother, Gilliam, which adds a layer of personal history and motivation not present in the original source material. As for abilities, beyond her political acumen, her primary notable ability is her nature as a first-generation Bioroid. This grants her enhanced intelligence and biological perfection. However, her most dangerous asset is her strategic cunning and her willingness to make morally ambiguous decisions, such as manipulating events from behind the scenes, to secure what she believes is the best outcome for the future of Olympus and the world.
