TV-Series
Description
Mutenroshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is an elderly martial arts master who resides on a small island known as Kame House alongside his anthropomorphic turtle companion. He is the creator of the Kamehameha technique and has lived for over three centuries, having been born on March 20 in the year 430. His appearance is distinctive: bald, with a thick white mustache and beard, and he is almost always seen wearing sunglasses, beach clothes or a martial arts suit, and often carries a walking stick. In his younger years, he wore a turtle shell on his back as part of his training.
His personality is a blend of contradictory traits. On one hand, he is wise, perceptive, and deeply knowledgeable about martial arts, earning him the title of the God of Martial Arts. He is a respected teacher who has shaped the foundations of many of Earth's greatest fighters. On the other hand, he is known for his lecherous behavior, frequently flirting with or harassing attractive women, which often provides comic relief. He can also be cantankerous and whimsical, but beneath these layers lies a genuine desire to guide the next generation and protect the Earth.
Mutenroshi's primary motivation is to pass on his martial arts knowledge and foster strong, honorable warriors. He takes his role as a teacher seriously, often testing his students with rigorous physical labor and unconventional training methods to build their strength, discipline, and character. His motivations are rooted in a sense of responsibility for the safety of the world, as he understands that powerful threats require equally powerful defenders.
Within the overall story, Mutenroshi serves as a foundational mentor figure. He was the first master to train Son Goku and Krillin, establishing the basics that would allow them to grow into formidable fighters. He also trained Yamcha, Grandpa Son Gohan, and the Ox-King. During the original Dragon Ball series, he competed anonymously in the World Martial Arts Tournament under the alias Jackie Chun, defeating Goku in the finals to teach him humility and the value of perseverance. In Dragon Ball Z, his role shifts from active combatant to strategic advisor and source of wisdom. While he does not engage in major battles directly, he provides critical guidance to the Z Fighters, such as explaining techniques and helping to develop strategies against powerful enemies. His presence remains a stabilizing force, and his home at Kame House becomes a gathering place for the heroes.
His key relationships are central to the series. With Son Goku, he is the boy's first teacher and a figure of deep respect, having instilled in him the values of hard work and fair play. With Krillin, he is a mentor who helps him overcome his insecurities and become a confident warrior. He also shares a long history with his older sister, the fortune-teller Baba, and has a friendly but often exasperated dynamic with Bulma and the other members of the group. His relationship with his former rival and fellow student, the Crane Hermit, reflects the schism in their martial arts philosophy.
Over the course of the series, Mutenroshi undergoes notable development. Initially portrayed as the strongest mortal fighter on Earth, his power becomes increasingly outmatched as the scale of threats escalates. He comes to terms with his limitations and focuses on his role as a teacher and advisor rather than a frontline combatant. Later, in Dragon Ball Super, he rededicates himself to training and even participates in the Tournament of Power, demonstrating that his experience and technique can still hold value against far more powerful opponents. This arc shows his continued growth and willingness to adapt.
Mutenroshi possesses numerous notable abilities. He is the inventor and master of the Kamehameha wave, a concentrated blast of ki energy that can be focused to incredible power. He can also greatly increase his muscle mass and height by concentrating his energy, which enhances his strength and allows him to perform devastating attacks, such as a Kamehameha strong enough to destroy the moon. His skill set includes the Evil Containment Wave, a sealing technique meant to imprison powerful demons, though it exacts a heavy toll on the user. He is also highly proficient in basic ki manipulation, superhuman speed and agility, and has immense longevity due to his mastery of martial arts. Despite his age, his combat experience and tactical intelligence make him a crafty and dangerous opponent, capable of surprising even much stronger fighters.
