Description
Makoto Mizuhara is a seventeen-year-old high school student from Shinonome High School who serves as the protagonist of El Hazard: The Alternative World. He is scientifically gifted, performs well in both academics and sports, and is generally well-liked by his peers. At the start of the series, he is transported from the world of El Hazard to another alternate reality called Creteria, following the wedding of his teacher Masamichi Fujisawa. This new world is a militant and chaotic environment, and Makoto becomes focused on finding a way for himself and his companions to return home.
Makoto is characterized by his kindhearted and determined nature. He is sensible and courageous, often putting himself at risk to protect others. Though he can be somewhat naive and is not adept at handling finances, his intelligence and problem-solving skills make him a reliable figure in crises. His primary motivation is to ensure the safety of his friends and to find a way back to his own world, though he also becomes deeply involved in the conflicts of the worlds he visits.
In El Hazard: The Alternative World, Makoto continues to develop his unique ability to sense, activate, and interface with ancient El Hazard technology by touch. This power allows him to understand and operate advanced machinery and artifacts, which proves vital in navigating the dangers of the new world. He shares a strong romantic connection with Princess Rune Venus of Roshtaria, and his feelings for her are a central emotional thread. He also maintains a complex bond with the android-like being Ifurita, who sent him on his initial journey and with whom he shares a connection that transcends time. His rivalry with Katsuhiko Jinnai persists, as Jinnai continues to oppose him and align with forces that threaten peace. Other key relationships include his friendship with Nanami Jinnai, who harbors unspoken feelings for him, and his respect for his teacher Fujisawa. Throughout the series, Makoto grows from an ordinary student into a capable hero who willingly faces great personal risk to protect those he cares about and to preserve the balance between worlds.
