Description
Misaki Suzuhara is the twelve-year-old protagonist who moves from her grandparents' home in Wakayama to live with her aunt Shoko Asami in Tokyo, using money her absent mother had been sending her, so she can attend middle school. She is a timid, sweet-tempered, and kind girl who often worries about her small stature and lack of athleticism, sometimes being mistaken for an elementary school student. This insecurity drives her central motivation: she sees the game Angelic Layer as a way to prove to herself and others that being small is not a disadvantage. After witnessing a match featuring the white angel Athena on a screen outside Tokyo Station, she becomes fascinated and, with the help of the eccentric scientist Ichiro Mihara, known as Icchan, purchases her own angel, which she names Hikaru. Misaki quickly earns the nickname Miracle Rookie for her unexpected victories. Her role in the story is that of a determined newcomer who rises through the ranks of Angelic Layer tournaments, uncovering the game's secrets and the truth behind her mother's disappearance. Key relationships include her loyal school friends Kotaro Kobayashi and Tamayo Kizaki, who support and train with her; her aunt Shoko, who acts more like a big sister; Icchan, who serves as a mentor; the skilled player Ohjiro Mihara, who becomes both a rival and a guide; and her estranged mother, Shuko Suzuhara, whose connection to the game is gradually revealed. Throughout the series, Misaki develops from a shy, uncertain girl into a more confident and perceptive competitor. Her notable abilities include strong analytical skills that allow her to quickly assess opponents' strengths and weaknesses during matches, a keen intuition, and a deep emotional bond with Hikaru that enables them to fight with remarkable synergy. She often demonstrates the capacity to adapt her strategies on the fly, overcoming more experienced players through clever thinking and perseverance.
