Description
Kin'emon, also known as "Foxfire Kin'emon," is a samurai from the secluded region of Kuri in Wano Country. He holds the esteemed position of leader of the Nine Red Scabbards, the loyal group of retainers to the Kozuki Family. Born fifty-six years before the main storyline, Kin'emon has a chronological age of thirty-six due to being propelled twenty years forward in time.
Physically, Kin'emon is remarkably tall, standing at 295 centimeters, with a muscular build and asymmetrical eyes where the right opens wider than the left. His appearance is a classic depiction of a samurai, complete with a black topknot and goatee. He typically wears a two-toned samurai gi that is striped black and white on the left side and orange on the right, along with simple geta sandals. The crest of the Kozuki Family is tattooed on his back.
Kin'emon's personality is a complex blend of old-fashioned values, fierce loyalty, and contradictions. He strictly adheres to a samurai's code of honor, or bushido, and often demonstrates great stubbornness and pride. This pride can make him reluctant to accept help, especially from pirates, whom he initially despises due to the actions of Kaidou and the Beasts Pirates that led to his master's downfall. However, when his life is saved, he is quick to show gratitude and acknowledge his debt. Raised in Wano's isolated environment, his views on women are very traditional, expecting them to be modest and quiet, which leads to frequent clashes with the more liberated Nami. Yet, despite this outrage, he has a notable perverted streak, often contradicting his own lectures by enjoying immodest sights. Underneath his rigid exterior, Kin'emon is a passionate and emotional man who is quick to tears when recalling his master or witnessing acts of sacrifice, and he is fiercely protective of those he is sworn to serve.
Kin'emon's past reveals a much rougher origin. In his youth, he was a thug and gambler who stole from others, including his childhood friend Tsurujo. His life changed during the Mountain God Incident, where his reckless theft of a boar caused a massive beast to rampage through the Flower Capital. After the beast devoured Tsurujo, a horrified Kin'emon tried to attack it but was saved by Kozuki Oden, who also took the blame for the disaster. This act of selflessness inspired Kin'emon to dedicate his life to Oden's service. With encouragement from the wise Yasuie, he reformed himself and trained to become a dignified warrior.
His ultimate motivation is to fulfill his fallen master Kozuki Oden's dying wish: to open the borders of Wano Country. After Oden was executed by Kurozumi Orochi and Kaidou, Kin'emon dedicated his life to this cause. He traveled forward in time with Momonosuke, Oden's young heir, to protect him and gather allies to avenge their master and liberate their homeland.
In the story, Kin'emon serves as a central ally to the Straw Hat Pirates, first encountered on the island of Punk Hazard. Having been dismembered by Trafalgar Law's powers, he was found in separate pieces by the crew. Despite his initial distrust of pirates, the Straw Hats' unwavering kindness and willingness to help him find his young lord, Momonosuke, forged a powerful alliance. He posed as Momonosuke's father for protection and journeyed with them through Dressrosa, Zou, and ultimately back to Wano to spearhead the raid on Onigashima.
Key relationships define his character. His bond with his wife, Tsurujo, dates back to childhood; despite being separated for twenty years, both remained devoted to each other. His loyalty to Kozuki Oden is absolute, serving as the guiding force for his entire life. While he protects and serves Momonosuke dutifully, he is not immune to jealousy, often getting enraged over the boy's privileged interactions with the female members of the Straw Hat crew. His friendship with his fellow scabbards, including Kanjuro and Raizo, is profound, though complicated by betrayal and circumstance.
Throughout his journey, Kin'emon undergoes notable development. He transforms from a stubborn, prideful man who looks down on pirates to a trusted comrade who openly relies on the Straw Hats. His older, simplistic view of the world is constantly challenged as he encounters the wider seas modern customs, and Devil Fruit powers. In battle, he also demonstrates his resolve, evolving from being easily overpowered to actively wounding Kaidou during the Raid on Onigashima, proving the strength of his conviction and the power of Oden's inherited will.
As a samurai, Kin'emon possesses notable abilities. He is the user of the Fuku Fuku no Mi, a Devil Fruit that allows him to generate clothes and disguises by placing a leaf or stone on a person's head. He is a highly skilled swordsman, having created the Foxfire Style, which specializes in generating and, most notably, cutting through flames. His signature technique, Flame Slash, allows him to cleave through fire-based attacks, including Kaidou's dragon breath. In a combined attack with the other scabbards, he can use Paradise Totsuka, a technique passed down from Oden. Kin'emon is also proficient in using Haki, including the ability to sense auras and use Armament Haki to harden his blades.
