Description
Don Chinjao, formerly known by the epithets Don Chinjao and Chinjao the Drill, is a former pirate, the leader of the Chinjao Family, and the retired twelfth leader of the Happo Navy. He is an elderly man of large stature, approximately twice the height of an average human, with a very round belly. His most distinctive features are his thick white eyebrows, a long white beard and mustache, and a bald head with a prominent dent on the crown. The number twelve is tattooed on his left temple, signifying his former position. In his youth, his head was long and pointed, which earned him the nickname the Drill. However, after a defeat by the Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, his head was flattened into its current dented shape. His expression is usually calm and serene, but when enraged, his demeanor becomes fierce and his facial hair seems to wave upwards. He has a unique, memorable laugh: Hiyahoho.

Chinjao possesses a personality that balances a quiet, perceptive, and solemn nature with an intensely vengeful and proud character. He initially appears calm and unflappable, showing no reaction to the antics of others and even seeing through a disguise that fooled many. He carries an immense amount of pride in his family and his own formidable head, which was once rumored to be the hardest in the world. This pride is the source of a deep and long-held grudge against Garp, who not only nearly killed him but also took away his power and fortune by flattening his head. Chinjao firmly believes that a child inherits the sins of their parent, and he sought to exact his revenge not on Garp himself, but on his grandson, Monkey D. Luffy, believing that killing someone precious would cause Garp greater despair. This grudge was so consuming that he once stated he would have killed Luffys father, Dragon, if he had known of their relation. Despite this, he is capable of civility, often addressing even his enemies with honorific suffixes like -san or -kun. However, his composure is easily shattered by the mere thought of Garps bloodline, sending him into a violent rage. Conversely, Chinjao is also a deeply grateful individual. When Luffy inadvertently restored his head to its original pointed form during their battle, Chinjaos grudge vanished completely, replaced by profound respect and a desire to repay the young pirate.

Chinjaos primary motivation for much of his later life was tied to his lost treasure. In his prime, he had amassed a vast fortune, which he deemed his lifes work, and buried it within the Ice Continent. Using his uniquely shaped and incredibly hard pointed head, he alone could split open the ice to access the treasure. After Garp collapsed his head, Chinjao lost the ability to reach his fortune, a devastating blow that led him to retire from piracy entirely, heartbroken. For decades, he harbored a singular desire for revenge against Garps bloodline. His entry into the Corrida Colosseum tournament for the Flame-Flame Fruit was tied to this, as he sought to confront Luffy. Following the restoration of his head and the subsequent resolution of his grudge, his motivation shifted from revenge to gratitude and the continued prosperity of his family and navy.

Chinjao plays a significant role during the Dressrosa Arc. He arrives at the Corrida Colosseum with his grandsons, Sai and Boo, ostensibly to compete for the Flame-Flame Fruit, but also on a secret mission from the king of the Kano Country to investigate the Donquixote Familys illegal weapons trade. He is placed in Block C of the tournament battle royale. He confronts Luffy, reveals his knowledge of his true identity, and declares his intention to kill him. Despite being stopped by his grandsons before the match, he single-mindedly plows through the other gladiators in Block C to face Luffy. During their intense final clash, Luffys attack restores Chinjaos pointed head. Following his defeat, a grateful Chinjao relinquishes his grudge. He is later betrayed by Doflamingo and thrown into an underground dungeon, after which he joins an alliance of gladiators to stop the Warlord. He fights against Doflamingos executive, Lao G, and later approves of his grandson Sais relationship with Baby 5 after witnessing his strength. Ultimately, Chinjao passes the title of Don and control of the Happo Navy to Sai, who swears allegiance to Luffy as part of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.

Key relationships define much of Chinjaos character. His most significant and defining relationship is with Monkey D. Garp, the man who ruined his prime. His hatred for Garp consumed him and was meant to be channeled through his grandson, Monkey D. Luffy. This adversarial relationship transforms completely after their fight, with Chinjao becoming a firm and grateful ally who respects Luffy immensely. Within his own family, Chinjao shares an affectionate bond with his grandsons, Sai and Boo. He is proud of their strength and, despite initial anger when Sai defies him to save Baby 5, he cries tears of joy when Sai proves his power by bending Chinjaos newly restored pointed head. He also develops a grudge against Donquixote Doflamingo after being tricked and imprisoned by him, vowing to make him pay. He shows a brief animosity toward Silvers Rayleigh upon learning that the Pirate Kings first mate trained Luffy.

Chinjao undergoes a significant development over the course of his appearance. He begins as a bitter, vengeful old man defined by a past defeat. His entire identity and motivation were wrapped up in a loss he could not overcome. However, his physical defeat by Luffy paradoxically grants him the very thing he lost his pointed head. This restoration leads to a complete emotional and psychological transformation. He abandons his decades-long grudge, regains his pride, and gratefully accepts his grandsons rise to power. He transitions from a retired has-been to an elder who happily passes on his legacy to the next generation. His arc concludes with him finding peace and joy in his familys future, watching Sai take over as the new leader of the Happo Navy.

Chinjao is an exceptionally powerful individual. In his golden age, he was a renowned pirate with a bounty of over five hundred million, capable of fighting on par with a prime Garp. After his head was flattened, his power diminished with age, yet he remained a formidable fighter. His primary physical ability revolves around his head, using powerful headbutts as his main offensive weapon. Even in its blunted state, his head was hard enough to slightly bend the legendary sword Durandal and block attacks with ease. He was a master of Hasshoken, an eight impacts fist fighting style that uses vibrations to break armor and weapons from the inside. His signature technique, the Hasshoken Ogi: Kiryu Kirikugi (Drill Dragon Drill Nail), was the ultimate headbutt that could split the Ice Continent. After his head was restored by Luffy, he regained the ability to use this technique. Chinjao is also one of the few characters capable of using all three forms of Haki. He demonstrated powerful Haoshoku Haki, knocking out many gladiators in the colosseum at once, and he is highly proficient in Busoshoku Haki, which he uses to harden his head and fists for devastating attacks.
