Description
Pedro, known as Pedro of the Treetops, is a jaguar mink from the island of Zou who appears during the later parts of One Piece. He served as the captain of the Guardians, the warrior unit of the Whale Forest, under the rule of Duke Nekomamushi, and earlier in life he led a pirate crew called the Nox Pirates, which earned him a bounty of 382,000,000 berries.
His early years were marked by an encounter with the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, when Roger visited Zou. A young Pedro asked to join Roger's crew, but Roger refused, telling him that everyone has their turn to take the stage and that his time had not yet come. This moment shaped Pedro's lifelong belief in the Dawn of the World, an era of great change that he believed would be brought about by a chosen few, and it later guided his trust in Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Seeking to help bring about that future and to find the poneglyphs that held the world's secrets, Pedro formed the Nox Pirates and set sail with his crew, which included his childhood friend Pekoms and a companion named Zepo.
That voyage ended in tragedy in the territory of the pirate emperor Charlotte Linlin, known as Big Mom. While trying to obtain a copy of the Road Poneglyph kept on Whole Cake Island, the crew was captured, and Zepo was killed after having his lifespan taken. Pedro himself lost fifty years of his life to Big Mom's powers, leaving him with a greatly shortened remaining lifespan. He also fought Baron Tamago during this period and destroyed one of the enemy's eyes. Afterward he returned to Zou and devoted himself to protecting his homeland, becoming the trusted right hand of Nekomamushi and the captain of the Guardians, a role he carried with deep honor and loyalty.
In personality, Pedro was cool-headed, righteous, and deeply loyal to his friends and his country. He was grateful to those who helped Zou and was willing to lay down his life for what he believed in. During the journey to Totto Land he acted as a strategist and guide, using his knowledge of Big Mom's territory. He fought alongside Luffy, Brook, and Carrot, helped protect Luffy from an attack by Charlotte Katakuri, and created a distraction that allowed Brook to take a copy of Big Mom's Road Poneglyph. When the escape from Whole Cake Island was blocked by the candy of Perospero, Pedro made the decision to ignite explosives attached to his body in a suicide attack intended to destroy Perospero and free the Thousand Sunny. Although Perospero survived, the explosion created the opening the crew needed, and Pedro's death was later confirmed.
