Description
Bepo is a polar bear mink and serves as the navigator for the Heart Pirates, the crew led by Trafalgar Law. His origins lie on the island of Zou, the home of the mink tribe, and he is the younger brother of Zepo, a member of the Nox Pirates. As a child, Bepo left Zou in search of his brother but became lost at sea, eventually drifting to Swallow Island in the North Blue. There, he was taken in by a man named Wolf and met a young Trafalgar Law, who defended him from local bullies, Shachi and Penguin. Together with Law, Shachi, and Penguin, Bepo would go on to become one of the founding members of the Heart Pirates. He later studied navigation specifically to find his way back to his homeland, Zou.
In terms of personality, Bepo is known for being highly sensitive and prone to depression, often apologizing profusely when people point out that he is a talking bear or refer to him as an animal. He is easily flustered and has a tendency to become downcast when scolded by his crewmates, who sometimes accuse him of having a weak will. This perception is ironic, however, as Bepo demonstrated immense mental fortitude by remaining conscious after being subjected to Silvers Rayleigh's Haoshoku Haki, a feat only those with exceptionally strong wills can accomplish. Despite his gentle and meek demeanor, Bepo is a capable and loyal pirate, deeply devoted to his captain, Trafalgar Law.
Bepo’s primary role in the story is as the navigator of the Heart Pirates. He possesses the knowledge to navigate the perilous Grand Line and has demonstrated skill in cartography, having drawn a map of Dressrosa and Green Bit for the Straw Hat Pirates. He is also a combatant for the crew, engaging in numerous battles alongside his comrades. His most significant development is tied to his mink heritage. As a mink, Bepo has the innate ability to use Electro, a technique that channels electricity through his body. His most powerful transformation is Sulong, a form that can only be activated by looking at a full moon. In this form, his size increases dramatically, his fur grows wild, and his physical strength becomes monstrous, allowing him to easily overpower much larger opponents. Later in the series, he is given a special medicine created by Tony Tony Chopper that allows him to forcibly activate the Sulong form without needing a full moon.
Key relationships define Bepo's journey. His bond with Trafalgar Law is the most significant; Law saved him from bullies as a child, and Bepo has since shown unwavering loyalty to him, serving as a trusted crewmate for years. He also has a long-standing dynamic with fellow founding members Shachi and Penguin, having started as a victim of their teasing before becoming their ally and friend. His relationship with his brother Zepo, who he left Zou to find, remains a motivating factor in his backstory. Notably, the World Government assigned Bepo a bounty of only 500 Berries, which is extremely low and is implied to be because the Marines initially dismissed him as nothing more than a pet or a talking animal, similar to how they undervalued Chopper. In combat, Bepo is a skilled martial artist, utilizing a fighting style reminiscent of Bruce Lee, complete with distinctive yells and powerful kicks, much like Sanji. He also has exceptional hearing and is a remarkably fast swimmer.
