Description
Agent Mai is a long-standing character who first appears in the early chapters of the original Dragon Ball manga as a loyal minion to the diminutive emperor Pilaf. She is a human-type Earthling with long black hair and a tall, striking appearance, typically dressed in a teal or green military-style trench coat adorned with red star insignias, which gives her the look of a spy from a classic film. Her name, along with her partner Shu, forms a pun on the Japanese word for the dumpling "shumai".

Mai's personality is defined by a serious, calculating, and professional demeanor, which serves as a direct foil to the more comic and bumbling nature of her partner, Shu. Despite her intelligence and competence, she is inextricably part of the Pilaf Gang, and their collective plans for world domination are almost always thwarted in comedic fashion. She is fiercely loyal to Emperor Pilaf, faithfully following his often-absurd orders regardless of the hardship she must endure. However, beneath her stern exterior lies a hidden, sometimes juvenile sense of humor, and she can be surprisingly shy or conservative regarding matters of romance or intimacy. She also has a strong instinct for self-preservation, and on more than one occasion, she has chosen to flee a hopeless situation rather than face certain defeat.

In the original Dragon Ball story, Mai's primary role is as a minor antagonist, working alongside Pilaf and Shu to steal the Dragon Balls and aid Pilaf's wish for world domination. She is resourceful and relies on technology and weaponry, including various firearms, explosives, and large pilotable mech suits, to compensate for her lack of superhuman strength. Although their efforts are consistently foiled by the young Son Goku and his friends, the trio persists in their schemes. At one point, they even form a temporary and ill-fated alliance with the demon king Piccolo.

The character undergoes a significant transformation off-screen between the major story arcs. During the three-year gap before the arrival of the Androids, the Pilaf Gang successfully gathered the Dragon Balls. Pilaf wished for himself and his followers to become young again, but the wish was granted by turning them into children, reverting their physical ages to around that of Trunks, Bulma's son. This event reset their appearances and led to their re-introduction in the series Dragon Ball Super. In this younger form, Mai’s appearance is simplified, with her military coat and boots remaining but without her makeup and with her hair now shorter.

This physical transformation sets the stage for her most developed role in the Future Trunks Saga of Dragon Ball Super. In the main timeline, Mai exists as a child alongside a young Trunks, and a subtle, one-sided dynamic is established with the boy. However, her most crucial role is in the future alternate timeline. In this desolate world ravaged by Goku Black and Future Zamasu, an aged and battle-hardened Future Mai becomes the leader of the Earth's resistance movement. No longer a comedic villain, she is a courageous and selfless fighter who wields a shotgun and coordinates guerrilla attacks against the divine perpetrators. In this timeline, she shares a deep, mutual bond of love and trust with the adult Future Trunks, acting as his closest confidant and partner in the struggle to save their world. Her bravery in the face of hopeless odds and her willingness to sacrifice herself for Trunks highlight her profound development from a petty criminal into a genuine hero. Her relationship with Future Trunks becomes one of the emotional cores of the saga, transforming her from a gag character into a figure of pathos and determination.
