Description
Linna Yamazaki is a member of the Knight Sabers, a vigilante group in the futuristic city of MegaTokyo, where she serves as the team's close-quarters combat specialist and high-mobility fighter. She is 22 years old, with black hair and black eyes, and stands out among her teammates as the most socially conventional and grounded member of the group.
Linna's background is marked by personal tragedy. During the chaos following the great Kanto earthquake, a rampaging boomer created havoc across the city. The newly formed AD Police were unable to control the situation, and many citizens lost their lives. Linna's parents were among those casualties, leaving her orphaned at the age of 15. Unlike her teammate Priss, who became embittered by similar loss, Linna's natural optimism and cheerful disposition helped her overcome her grief. She continued to train herself, holding onto a lifelong dream of becoming a world-class entertainer and professional dancer. She later auditioned for a musical revue, giving her best performance, but the judges were not satisfied. Her dream was shattered, and at this low point in her life, she met Sylia Stingray. Unlike the judges, Sylia was impressed by Linna's excellent reflexes, strong will, and physical abilities, and recruited her into the Knight Sabers.
By day, Linna works as an aerobics instructor, a job that suits her athletic build and dance training. She is a highly skilled gymnast and martial artist, with agility that is second to none among the Sabers. While she is not as physically strong as Priss, she is a far more technical fighter, and her years of dance training give her a flamboyant, energetic, and up-close fighting style. She is the athlete of the team, and her combat role relies on speed, precision, and acrobatic movement.
Linna wears a green Hard Suit that is designed to take full advantage of her agility and grace. The suit is equipped with signature weapons called ribbon cutters, which are long, electrically charged nanomolecular ropes mounted behind the helmet that she can use to slash through boomers and other high-tech opponents by twirling her head and body. She is also armed with explosive knuckle bombers, which are shaped charges on the edge of her gauntlet that deliver devastating blows at point-blank range, as well as a finger-mounted triplet laser gun. In the sequel series Bubblegum Crash, the knuckle bombers and lasers are replaced with electrically charged twin wire-daggers, and Linna's Hard Suit receives an upgrade with enhanced capabilities.
Personality-wise, Linna is practical, honest, polite, fun-loving, and sympathetic to people in trouble. She can come across as superficial at times because she is often concerned with everyday matters such as money, men, clothes, her car, and her bad luck with vehicles. She is the most normal member of the Knight Sabers, not driven by vengeance or a singular obsession, but by a more relatable set of motivations. She is fickle and highly materialistic, and her constant desire for money eventually leads her to switch careers to stockbroker consulting after the events of Bubblegum Crisis. However, beneath this practical exterior, she maintains one true passion: dance. She also has a strong sense of decency and heartfelt warmth, and her presence is crucial to the emotional core of several story arcs.
Within the Knight Sabers, Linna acts as a stabilizing and team-oriented presence. She is an excellent team player and often provides the heartfelt warmth and decency that ties the group together. She has a close bond with Nene Romanova, the team's youngest member and hacker, and there is a comic side to her personality that comes out especially when she interacts with Nene's foibles. She acts as something of an older sister figure to Nene. Her relationship with Priss is one of mutual respect, with Linna's technical precision complementing Priss's raw power. She was recruited by Sylia, who saw potential in her when no one else did, and she remains loyal to the team's mission.
Over the course of the series, Linna experiences notable development. She initially joins the Knight Sabers partly for the excitement and the mercenary pay, but she becomes fully dedicated to the team's mission. She struggles with the emotional burden of being a vigilante and is haunted by her past, but she learns to confront it and becomes more comfortable with who she is. After the original Bubblegum Crisis series, she leaves her aerobics instructor job to work as a stocks analyst, but when crimes cause her tech stocks to plummet, she resigns and rejoins the Knight Sabers, showing that her commitment to the team and its cause ultimately outweighs her materialistic concerns.
