Description
Kana Sakuragi is the central protagonist of the story, a young woman whose life takes an unexpected turn while navigating the difficulties of job hunting after graduating from university. Having faced rejection from numerous companies, she often feels her best qualities—being diligent, hardworking, and studious—make her too plain or unremarkable to stand out to potential employers. Her situation changes during an interview when a monster, known as a Kaii, attacks the office. In the ensuing chaos, she assists Hitomi Koshigaya, a magical girl from the small startup Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. Recognizing Kana's unique talents, Hitomi offers her a position with the company, and she accepts, stepping into the world of professional monster extermination.
In terms of personality, Kana is initially portrayed as shy, introverted, and lacking in self-confidence, often doubting her own abilities. However, her character is underpinned by a strong sense of helpfulness and a remarkable work ethic. Her most defining traits are her excellent memory, keen observation skills, and ability to quickly process and retain vast amounts of information. While she tends to be pessimistic and anxious about making mistakes, this drives her to prepare thoroughly, such as by reading and memorizing entire operation manuals. As she works with her new colleagues, she blossoms into a more determined and self-assured person, finding confidence in her role as a vital link between the on-site magical girls and the engineers who design their spells.
Kana's primary motivation is to find a place where she can be useful and help others, a desire that was frustrated during her conventional job search. In her role at Magilumiere, she is driven by a need to prove her worth and to support her team. She feels a strong sense of responsibility and takes satisfaction in doing her job well, having finally found a career where her unique skill set is not only recognized but is crucial to the company's success. Unlike some who become magical girls for fame, Kana is motivated by the intellectual challenge and the collaborative spirit of her workplace.
Within the story, Kana serves as the audience's point of view, learning the intricacies of this unique world alongside the viewer. Her primary role on the team is that of an information processor and strategist. While her senior colleague, Hitomi Koshigaya, is a more reckless and experienced frontline fighter, Kana excels at analyzing situations, memorizing details, and devising creative solutions. She acts as a critical bridge between the field and the office, feeding information to company president Kouji Shigemoto and magical engineer Kazuo Nikoyama, who then create custom spells for her to use. Her role evolves as she gains experience, taking on responsibilities such as training new magical girls.
Kana's key relationships are central to her development. She shares a strong partnership with Hitomi Koshigaya, whose confidence and mentorship help Kana to grow while Kana's diligence and careful nature provide a perfect complement to Hitomi's impulsiveness. The eccentric but supportive president, Kouji Shigemoto, values her unique contributions and challenges her to think beyond the ordinary, emphasizing the company's focus on aesthetics and teamwork. She forms bonds with magical girls from other companies as well, such as the prodigy Mei Tsuchiba from the rival industry giant AST and the free-spirited Lily Aoi, each encounter teaching her about the different philosophies and styles of being a magical girl.
Throughout her journey, Kana undergoes significant development. Beginning as a job seeker who couldn't sell herself, she discovers that her seemingly plain traits are her greatest strengths. She grows from a nervous novice into a confident professional who can keep her cool in combat and think of effective strategies on the fly. This growth is so profound that later in the story, when Magilumiere is temporarily disbanded due to false accusations, Kana takes a year to obtain necessary qualifications and founds her own company, Sakuragi Planning, becoming its president. When the truth is revealed and Magilumiere is restored, she willingly steps down from her own presidency to return to her preferred role in the field, now a more seasoned and capable leader.
Kana's abilities are rooted in her exceptional cognitive skills rather than raw, explosive power. Her defining talent is her prodigious memory, allowing her to instantly recall vast amounts of information, including technical details about spells and equipment. This skill makes her an invaluable coordinator on the battlefield. She is highly observant, noticing small details that others miss, which she diligently reports back to her engineering team. While she uses standard magical girl equipment like a BROOM (a flying device), her true strength lies in how she uses information to adapt to any situation. Her memory is so reliable that she can masterfully utilize a customized BROOM with 108 extra functions, perfectly employing every single one. Her magic is cast using programming terminology, reflecting the technology-based system of her world, and her approach is defined by careful study and strategic planning rather than brute force.
