Description
Johnny Joestar, whose real name is Jonathan Joestar, is one of the two central protagonists of the Steel Ball Run competition. Born in 1872 into a wealthy but emotionally cold family in Kentucky, Johnny was once a celebrated prodigy in the world of horse racing. He achieved fame and success at a very young age, but his life changed forever after a petty dispute over cutting in line at a movie theater; an argument that ended with him being shot in the spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.
This tragic event shattered Johnny’s identity as a jockey and left him in a state of deep despair. At the start of the race, he is presented as a bitter, cynical, and sarcastic young man, struggling with feelings of worthlessness and a strained relationship with his overbearing father. He meets Gyro Zeppeli, an Italian with a mysterious technique involving steel balls, and becomes convinced that Gyro's "Spin" holds the key to making his legs function again. Driven by this singular hope, Johnny decides to enter the Steel Ball Run, a grueling cross-country race from San Diego to New York.
Throughout the story, Johnny's primary motivation evolves. Initially, he is solely focused on learning the Spin to walk again, viewing his life as a "negative" that he must bring back to "zero". However, as the race uncovers a hidden plot surrounding the mummified remains of a saint, his goal shifts. He becomes determined to collect these holy Corpse Parts to cure his paralysis. Johnny is characterized by a pragmatic and ruthless determination described by a rival as a "pitch-black will". He is willing to make morally complex choices to achieve his objectives, yet he remains deeply loyal to his friends. His relationship with Gyro Zeppeli is the emotional core of his journey, starting as a transactional partnership but developing into a profound and unbreakable friendship. Gyro's eccentric lessons and unwavering support gradually help Johnny grow out of his self-pity, teaching him not just about the Spin but about pride, honor, and the weight of one's actions.
In terms of combat and presence in the story, Johnny is defined by his Stand, Tusk, which he awakens after passing through the supernatural region known as the Devil's Palm. Unlike many physically imposing Stands, Tusk begins as a small, creature-like entity that resides in Johnny's left arm. As Johnny masters the Golden Ratio and the principles of the Spin, his Stand evolves through multiple acts. Tusk ACT1 allows him to spin and fire his own fingernails as deadly bullets. ACT2 grants these bullet holes the ability to track targets, while ACT3 allows Johnny to retract into the holes, essentially performing short-range teleportation. The final evolution, Tusk ACT4, is one of the most formidable abilities in the JoJo universe; it requires Johnny to utilize the perfect rotational energy of a horse at a gallop. This form fires nails imbued with "Infinite Rotation," capable of bypassing dimensional barriers, overriding time stops, and following targets across parallel worlds. He is also defined by his relationship with his loyal horse, Slow Dancer, who is his primary means of mobility and combat.
Johnny’s narrative arc is one of tragic rebirth. He goes from a bitter, crippled former celebrity to a determined hero willing to sacrifice everything to stop the corrupt Funny Valentine. However, his development comes at a tremendous cost. Following the conclusion of the Steel Ball Run, Johnny eventually regains his ability to walk but leads a life marked by loss. Years later, he marries Rina Higashikata. When she falls ill, he performs one final act by using the power of the Corpse Parts to save her, a transgression that results in his own death, cementing his legacy as one of the most complex and tragic figures in the series.
