Description
Lu Shaotang is a major supporting character in Sakamoto Days. She is the eighteen-year-old daughter of a powerful Chinese Triad family. After her parents were killed by rival assassins, she fled to Japan carrying the key to her family’s vault, which contained their most precious treasures. She was rescued by Taro Sakamoto and Shin Asakura during an attack by members of the Danshokai gang, and afterwards she began working as a store clerk at Sakamoto’s convenience store, where she becomes the store’s pork bun chef. She is considered a member of the Sakamoto family.
Her personality is bright, easygoing, and playful, often arriving late to work and bickering with Shin in a sibling-like manner. However, when she or her friends are threatened, her demeanor shifts entirely, revealing a ruthless and highly capable fighter. She is fiercely loyal to Sakamoto, his wife Aoi, and daughter Hana, regarding them as her new family.
Her background in the Triad world gave her extensive combat training. She primarily uses a fighting style based on Tai Chi, which allows her to redirect an opponent’s momentum and deliver powerful strikes using internal energy rather than brute force. Her true strength emerges when she consumes alcohol, activating the Drunken Fist technique. This technique enhances her unpredictability and pain resistance, and it manifests in several distinct modes depending on her emotional state: a crying drunk state that increases precision, an angry drunk state that turns her into a brutal and aggressive attacker, a happy drunk state that makes her nimble and deceptive, and a triad drunk state that unlocks her deadliest level of speed, strength, and intimidation. She also possesses a remarkably high alcohol tolerance, able to drink pure ethanol without losing combat effectiveness.
In the story, Lu serves as both comedic relief and a capable ally in battle. She helps protect the Sakamoto family from various assassins and criminals. She shares a strong bond with Shin, often trading insults but working well together when needed. She respects Sakamoto as a mentor and leader, and she looks up to Aoi as a maternal figure. She also forms a working partnership with sniper Heisuke Mashimo. Over the course of the series, her role gradually diminishes as the focus shifts to Shin and Sakamoto, but her early presence establishes her as a vital part of the Sakamoto team. Her motivations are rooted in finding a peaceful life and a sense of belonging after the loss of her biological family, and she embraces the Sakamoto store as her new home.
