Description
Magma is a prominent villager from Ishigami Village, known as one of the strongest warriors and the primary antagonist of the story's first major arc before transitioning into a powerful ally of the Kingdom of Science. He is a large, muscular man with a towering physique, standing approximately 186 centimeters tall. He has slicked-back blond hair, with a single lock often falling in front of his face, and possesses a strong, prominent jawline. His typical attire reflects the villagers' style, incorporating rope into his outfit and wearing a dark blue tunic, though he sometimes dons a fur-trimmed coat in colder weather. His birthday is August 22.

At the start, Magma has an extremely ambitious and power-hungry personality. He is obsessed with becoming the chief of Ishigami Village, seeing it as the ultimate prize and believing that power and physical strength are the sole measures of a leader's worth. He is rough, aggressive, and possesses a cruel streak, showing no hesitation to use violence or underhanded tactics to achieve his goals. In the previous Grand Bout tournament, he arrogantly revealed his plan to let the chief's daughter, Ruri, die after marrying her just to gain power, an admission that led to his defeat by Kohaku. This obsession makes him initially hostile towards the outsider Senku Ishigami, whose unconventional ideas and scientific knowledge threaten Magma's path to leadership. He demonstrates a willingness to kill, attempting to murder Gen Asagiri whom he mistook for Senku, and ordering the kidnapping of the young girl Suika to manipulate the tournament's outcome.

Despite this brutish exterior, Magma is not unintelligent, though his thinking is straightforward and often impulsive. He is relatively simple and gullible, easily falling for Gen's psychological tricks and "magic". He speaks with a vulgar laugh and often acts before thinking, leading him to be labeled a "muscle-brain" by characters like Chrome. However, this simplicity is paired with a genuine, if harsh, sense of practicality. He values the survival of his village, and his belief in rule by strength stems from a sincere, though primitive, understanding of what it takes to survive in the Stone World. As Senku observes, his arrogance is not his defining trait; rather, he honestly believed the strongest should lead for the village's survival.

Magma's primary motivation throughout the story is his desire for power and status, specifically the position of village chief. Initially, this makes him a dangerous rival to Senku. However, after witnessing the miracles of science and how it can improve life, his motivations begin to shift. He remains ambitious but develops a respect for Senku's intellect, finding his inventions genuinely interesting. This shift transforms his desire to kill Senku into a more tolerable rivalry, and he eventually begins to willingly lend his immense strength to the Kingdom of Science's projects, hoping to prove his worth and still, perhaps, one day claim leadership.

Magma's role in the story evolves dramatically. He first serves as the central obstacle during the Village Games arc, where his raw power and cunning almost secure him victory. After being defeated, he becomes a reluctant and volatile, yet indispensable, asset to the Kingdom of Science. His unparalleled physical strength makes him the go-to person for heavy labor, such as mining for rare minerals like tungsten, construction, and acting as a powerful combatant in battles against the Tsukasa Empire and later on Treasure Island. His aggressive nature often puts him at odds with the more strategic members of the team, but his impulsiveness can also create unexpected advantages in combat.

Magma has several key relationships that define his character. His dynamic with Senku is central, moving from open hostility to a grudging respect, with Magma ultimately saving Senku's life during a cave collapse, an act he cowardly tries to downplay. He has a complex relationship with Gen, who bested him with tricks and whom he once tried to kill. Over time, he grows to admire Gen's skills, asking him to be his underling, and they develop an effective, if unconventional, partnership. He maintains a rivalry with the warrior Kohaku, who bested him and whose strength he acknowledges. He also shows respect for other strong individuals like Kinro and admires the limitless stamina of Taiju. Finally, he is almost always accompanied by his loyal supporter, Mantle, who serves as his hypeman and confidant.

Magma undergoes notable development, primarily through his redemption arc during the tungsten mining expedition. When he, Senku, and Chrome are trapped in a collapsing cave, he has the perfect opportunity to let them die and eliminate his rivals. Instead, he chooses to save them, revealing a hidden sense of loyalty and a growing appreciation for science. While he still professes his desire to be chief, his intent to kill for it vanishes. He accepts that his strength alone is not enough to lead and finds a new role as the core of the Kingdom of Science's "power team". Later, his ambition resurfaces in his rivalry with Yo Uei, as they constantly compete to prove which of them is superior, and he even briefly schemes to become captain. In the end, after the main conflicts are resolved, his character finds a final, more peaceful purpose when he accepts Yo's invitation to become a police officer.

Magma's notable abilities are almost entirely physical. He possesses extreme levels of strength and endurance, making him one of the most powerful characters in the Stone World in terms of raw power. He is a skilled fighter, proficient with weapons like a staff and an axe, and can withstand a massive flurry of attacks. The official stats for Magma rate his power at a maximum of 5 out of 5, though his technique is low at 1 out of 5, confirming that his fighting style relies on overwhelming force rather than finesse. His immense strength is frequently utilized for tasks such as mining, breaking down tough materials, and heavy lifting, proving that his brawn is an essential resource for Senku's scientific endeavors.
