TV-Series
Description
The character known as the Dover Demon in DAN DA DAN is also referred to by other names within the series, including Mantis Shrimp or Shako, a nod to his physical resemblance to a mantis shrimp. Seiko Ayase nicknames him Kappa because of the shape of his head. He is a combat-type alien with a muscular humanoid body, dark yellow skin, and a head that resembles a crab or crustacean. His distinctive appearance is completed by his round, beady eyes, and his choice of attire typically includes a speedo, a tie, and a pair of bright red boxing gloves.
Originally hired by the Serpoians as a mercenary or gig worker, the Dover Demon first appears as an antagonist. His motivations are not born of malice but of deep desperation. He has an only son named Chiquitita who suffers from a rare, life-threatening illness that causes him to lose blood, requiring regular blood transfusions. The Dover Demon’s wife also died from this same illness. His home planet is a conflict zone, making normal employment impossible and forcing him to take dangerous work to earn the money needed for his son’s medical treatment.
In combat, the Dover Demon is a formidable physical fighter, relying on overwhelming punching power. His signature technique is the Jet Punch, a single blow strong enough to demolish a building. His abilities are amplified in aquatic environments, where his destructive force increases tenfold, allowing him to use water currents to strike distant enemies. Through an injection from the Serpoians called the Serpo Energy Drink, he can transform into a state known as Dover Demon Strong Style 24. In this form, his body becomes slimmer and taller, his combat strength multiplies 24 times, and his underwater punching power is enhanced even further, though this state lasts only for 24 minutes.
The trajectory of his role changes dramatically due to the kindness of the main human characters. After his defeat, Seiko Ayase realizes that the fluid his species bleeds is actually milk. She helps him secure dairy cows from Earth to provide the necessary blood for his son’s transfusions, a treatment impossible to sustain on his war-torn home world. Overwhelmed with gratitude, he pledges his loyalty to Seiko and the group, becoming their first alien ally.
While he returns to his planet initially, the difficult environment forces him to come back to Earth, where he lives disguised as a human named Peny and works on a dairy farm. True to his word, he proves to be a reliable friend, appearing at critical moments to provide assistance to Momo, Okarun, and the others. His personality is a mix of earnest professionalism and an odd, comedic streak. He follows orders diligently but dislikes harsh treatment, and he has a peculiar habit of singing a parody of the ABBA song Chiquitita when engaged in battle. His story represents a shift from a simple enemy-for-hire to a trusted and grateful ally, driven by the universal motivation of a parent trying to save their child.
