Description
Kyoka Jiro is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School training to become a Pro Hero. She was born to a musical family, her father Kyotoku Jiro a composer and her mother Mika Jiro a musician. She inherited her mother’s Quirk, Earphone Jack, and grew up learning multiple instruments, with a particular passion for rock music and bass guitar. Despite her deep musical roots, Kyoka chose to pursue a hero career rather than follow her parents directly into music, out of a desire to dedicate herself to helping others. She initially worried her parents might be disappointed, but they fully supported her decision.
Kyoka has a pragmatic, blunt, and unenthusiastic demeanor, often directing snarky remarks at classmates who irritate her, especially Denki Kaminari, whose cluelessness makes him a frequent target. Beneath this cool, sometimes prickly exterior she is fiercely loyal, kind, and deeply caring toward her friends. She can be reserved with strangers but warms up once trust is established. Kyoka also harbors insecurities about her femininity and appearance, reacting defensively when compared to more physically developed classmates. She is passionate about music, a love she initially considered a useless hobby unrelated to heroism, but she eventually embraces it as a way to uplift and save others. She enjoys her own company, often wearing headphones to tune out noise, and has a pronounced fear of horror-themed situations.
Her primary motivation is to become a hero who protects people, a drive that overrides her musical ambitions until she learns to reconcile the two. This growth crystallizes during the U.A. Cultural Festival, when she leads the Class 1-A band. Composing the music, helping classmates with their instruments, and performing publicly helps her see that her musical talents can bring joy and healing, bridging her love for music with her heroic identity. She later demonstrates fierce determination in the Final War arc, where she stands against All For One, declaring that she will fight because he made her friends cry. During that battle she suffers a severe injury, losing her left ear and earphone jack, a permanent consequence of her commitment.
Among her classmates, Kyoka’s most visible relationship is with Denki Kaminari, whom she teases constantly but also watches out for. After the final war and graduation, the two set up their hero offices next to each other, with Kyoka following out of concern for his independence. She is protective of Momo Yaoyorozu and the other girls, frequently using her earphone jacks to jab Minoru Mineta when he acts inappropriately. Her friendships are marked by a willingness to act decisively for their sake, as when she shielded them from harm or encouraged them in battle. In the epilogue eight years after the final war, she has become the No. 30 Pro Hero while also working as a professional musician and mentoring Eri in bass and guitar on her days off.
Kyoka’s Quirk, Earphone Jack, is a Mutant-type ability giving her long, flexible earlobes ending in 3.5 mm headphone jack plugs. She can extend these lobes up to six meters, using them as prehensile limbs, whips, or to pierce hard surfaces. By plugging into surfaces or her support gear, she channels the vibrations of her heartbeat to create destructive sound waves, shatter objects, or cause earthquakes. The jacks also grant exceptional hearing, making her valuable for reconnaissance, though this sensitivity leaves her vulnerable to extremely loud noises. Her hero costume incorporates stereo-integrated boots and wrist amplifiers to enhance her sonic output, and her fighting style is tactically oriented, favoring intelligence and planning over brute strength. She is academically gifted, ranking seventh in her class, and is trained in martial arts, complementing her sound-based attacks with close-quarters skill. Musically, she is proficient in bass, guitar, drums, and vocals, described as having a husky yet heavenly singing voice, talents she continues to develop alongside her hero career.
