Description
Kara Minami is a first-year high school student and a classmate of both Nico Wakatsuki and Morihito Otogi. She lives with her father and is deeply involved in her family’s traditions, serving as a shrine maiden at their shrine, a role her family has held for generations as archers. Her mother passed away from illness approximately one year before the start of the story.

Possessing a bright, assertive, and straightforward personality, Kara often acts as the mood-maker in her class. She is known for her unpretentious and confident nature, which allows her to easily dismiss unwanted advances from other students. Despite this strong and capable exterior, she harbors a hidden insecurity about her own personality, sometimes wishing she could be softer and more delicate than her naturally bold demeanor allows. Beneath this confident front, she is fundamentally kind, caring, and fiercely loyal to her friends.

One of Kara’s primary motivations is her deep care for her friends, which is a driving force behind her actions. This is rooted in her personal history; during middle school, she befriended Kukumi Ureshino, known as Cook, who was isolated from their peers. Kara made an effort to include her and help her integrate with others, and the two have remained close friends ever since. This same welcoming nature leads her and Kukumi to invite Nico, who is new to the school, to join them, quickly solidifying their trio and making Kara an integral part of the main friend group.

Kara’s role within the story is as a supportive and grounding presence. While not a magic user herself, she is a close confidante to the witch Nico. Her personal life becomes a central focus of a significant story arc that also profoundly affects Nico’s own motivations. The arc revolves around a letter left behind by Kara’s deceased mother, which her father shredded after reading it, causing a rift between them. With the help of her friends, who painstakingly reassemble the letter using magic, the truth is revealed: the mother who raised Kara was not her biological parent. Kara’s biological mother left shortly after she was born, and her father raised her alone before remarrying. He hid this to protect the bond between Kara and the mother she loved. Following this emotional revelation, Kara reconciles with her father, and the resolution of this conflict directly inspires Nico to use her magic to actively help others with their troubles.

Kara is an ordinary human, but her connection to her family’s shrine and her proximity to magic lead to a unique development. After she creates a poorly crafted paper bird, Nico’s magic accidentally brings the figure to life as a familiar named Shiki. This event is believed to be the result of combining Nico’s magic, the sacred location of the shrine, and Kara’s lineage as a shrine maiden. Shiki, a shikigami, is a loyal companion who usually resides in a hairpin that belonged to Kara’s mother. Shiki can fly, change its size dramatically, and is made from a type of paper that is durable and water-resistant.
