Description
Loid Forger, known by his code name Twilight, is the protagonist of the story and a master spy for Westalis, working within its intelligence agency. His true identity is unknown, as he discarded his original name and past at some point during his career. He was born in the town of Luwen, Westalis, near the border with Ostania, and experienced a deeply traumatic childhood when war broke out. He lost his mother and close friends during an attack, and his father’s fate is unknown. This event drove him to enlist in the army at a young age, where he was later recruited by Westalian intelligence and trained in espionage. His experience as a war orphan became the core motivation behind his entire career; he is driven by a deep desire to create a world where no child has to cry or suffer through conflict.

Loid’s personality is characterized by extreme discipline, methodical thinking, and a high degree of emotional control. As a spy, he is pragmatic and capable of adopting any personality needed to complete a mission, often appearing cold, calculating, and manipulative. However, he possesses a strong internal moral compass, genuinely believing that his dangerous work will lead to lasting peace. Despite his professional detachment, he is not devoid of emotion. Over time, his carefully maintained facade begins to soften, particularly in his interactions with his fake family, though he rarely admits this to himself or others. He is often shown as a calm and collected straight man in contrast to the more chaotic personalities around him, a source of both comedic and heartfelt moments.

The central role he plays in the story is that of the lead operative for Operation Strix. This mission requires him to get close to Donovan Desmond, the reclusive leader of the National Unity Party in Ostania, in order to prevent a potential war. Because Desmond is only accessible through school events, Loid creates a fake family, adopting a young orphan, Anya, and entering into a marriage of convenience with a city hall clerk, Yor Briar. He adopts the alias of Dr. Loid Forger, a psychiatrist at Berlint General Hospital, to maintain his cover. While his initial intent is purely mission-oriented, his role evolves from simply deceiving his targets into genuinely caring for the family he has built.

Key relationships are central to his development. With his adopted daughter Anya, he initially treats her as a tool for his mission but gradually reveals a nurturing and protective side, often going to great lengths to ensure her happiness and safety, even when he rationalizes these actions as being part of his assignment. His relationship with his fake wife Yor is similar; it begins as a practical arrangement, but he slowly develops genuine romantic feelings and a deep sense of respect for her, growing protective and even jealous over time. He is also a well-respected figure within the intelligence agency, with colleagues like Sylvia Sherwood, his handler, and a younger agent, Nightfall, who trained under him.

Loid’s character development is one of gradual emotional awakening. He begins as an almost entirely pragmatic professional who sees personal attachments as a liability. However, living with Anya and Yor forces him to confront his own humanity and past trauma. He tries to apply spy-level precision to the chaos of family life, and his frequent failures to do so create both humor and growth. He shows increasing vulnerability, especially when protecting Anya or defending his family’s honor, becoming willing to prioritize their wellbeing over strict mission efficiency. His past experiences, particularly the loss of his friends and family, are revisited as the story progresses, providing deeper context for his dedication to peace.

Regarding his abilities, Loid is an exceptionally talented spy. He possesses incredible combat skills, able to take on multiple armed opponents single-handedly. He is a master of disguise and impersonation, capable of perfectly mimicking another person’s appearance and voice in a short time. He has an eidetic memory, allowing him to recall vast amounts of information instantly, and he processes information at incredible speeds to formulate complex plans. He is an expert marksman, capable of precise shots under difficult conditions. He also has a superhuman tolerance for alcohol, which he uses to his advantage in social situations. In terms of domestic life, he is a highly adept cook, a skill that becomes a key point of bonding for his fake family.
