TV-Series
Description
Haruchiyo Sanzu is a character whose surface appearance belies a deeply unstable and fanatically loyal nature, a duality that becomes a central element of his role in the final conflicts of the series.
In his youth, before the events of the main story, Haruchiyo was known as a wild and uncontrollable troublemaker, a reputation that made him difficult to manage within any gang division. This chaotic energy was eventually tempered by Yasuhiro Muto, known as Mucho, the captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang's Fifth Division, who took Haruchiyo under his wing. During this period, Haruchiyo was calm, spoke rarely, and appeared to be a loyal and dependable vice-captain. However, this calm demeanor masked a growing, single-minded devotion not to Mucho, but to Manjiro Sano, also known as Mikey, the founder of Toman. His loyalty to Mikey is absolute and fanatical; he regards Mikey as his king and views all actions as justifiable if they serve him.
A pivotal event in Haruchiyo’s childhood forged his pathological personality. As a child, his younger sister, Senju Kawaragi, broke a model airplane that belonged to Mikey and falsely blamed Haruchiyo. In a fit of what is described as a dark impulse, Mikey attacked the young Haruchiyo, tearing the corners of his mouth and leaving him with permanent, disfiguring scars. Paradoxically, this traumatic event did not turn Haruchiyo against Mikey. Instead, it cemented his warped reverence for him, creating a psychological foundation for his later fanaticism. The scars are a constant physical reminder of this bond, and for much of his time in Toman, he wore a black mask given to him by Mucho to cover them.
Haruchiyo’s true manipulative and ruthless nature is revealed over time. He maintained a close relationship with Mucho, viewing him as a brother figure and seemingly following him when Mucho betrayed Toman to join the Tenjiku gang. Yet, this loyalty was an elaborate deception. After the conflict with Tenjiku, Haruchiyo lured Mucho to Yokohama Bay and brutally killed him with a katana for the crime of betraying Mikey. This act demonstrated not only his cold-bloodedness but also his immense skill with a blade and his ability to feign genuine connection for years to achieve his ultimate goal of eliminating anyone he perceives as a threat to his king.
As an adult in the violent Bonten criminal organization, Haruchiyo’s personality undergoes another dramatic shift. He becomes extroverted, loud, and openly sadistic, displaying clear psychopathic tendencies that are implied to be exacerbated by drug use. He takes euphoric delight in executing traitors, often while loudly proclaiming that he is acting on Mikey's will. In this future, he serves as Bonten's number two, with authority second only to Mikey himself. He is often seen wielding a katana and has a notable tattoo on his right forearm.
In the final story arc, known as the Three Deities or Kanto Manji arc, Haruchiyo serves as the vice-leader of the newly formed Kanto Manji Gang. His fanaticism reaches its apex here. He devises a plan to crash a train into the battlefield to kill everyone present, including his own allies, believing that eliminating all obstacles is the only way to serve Mikey. He shows no regard for anyone else, including his siblings, his older brother Takeomi Akashi and his sister Senju. He dismissively fights Senju, claiming that because he raised her, he knows her weaknesses, and is indifferent to his brother. His abilities as a fighter are formidable; he is capable of fighting skilled opponents like Ran and Rindo Haitani simultaneously and gains the advantage in a sword fight against Kakucho, Tenjiku’s former strongest warrior.
Ultimately, Haruchiyo’s driving motivation is his desire to see Mikey descend fully into his dark impulses, believing that this path is Mikey’s destiny. He is aware of the "curse" or dark impulse that plagues Mikey and actively works to ensure no one saves him from it. His development is tragically circular; a childhood of feeling neglected by his older brother and being unfairly blamed for his sister's actions left him seeking purpose and belonging, which he found only in the most destructive form of devotion to Mikey. In the final, successfully altered timeline where Mikey is saved from his dark impulses, Haruchiyo is freed from this madness. He no longer has his facial scars and lives a peaceful life, becoming an online celebrity alongside his sister Senju.
