Description
Homare Byobugaura is a student at Rasetsu Academy, recognized for her petite stature, standing at 151 centimeters, and her distinctive pink hair. Despite her noticeable figure, her most dominant trait is her profound lack of self-confidence. Her personality is characterized by extreme timidity and a near-constant state of anxiety, often leading her to excessively apologize, cry, and even kneel in supplication, believing herself to be a burden to those around her. This deep-seated insecurity and negative self-perception are not innate but are the direct result of a severely traumatic and abusive childhood.

Born on February 14, Homare endured a chaotic home life with her older sister, Sumire, after their mother disappeared when they were young. Their father was abusive, subjecting the sisters to verbal and physical violence, and preventing them from attending school. Sumire took on the responsibility of protecting and providing for Homare, working as a papergirl and attempting to teach her at home, while their father would steal their earnings for gambling. Homare's attempts to contribute by finding work ended in failure, which contributed heavily to her feelings of worthlessness compared to her capable sister. The tragedy culminated when Homare fell ill and her father, in a despicable act, tried to force her into prostitution. Sumire intervened, stabbing her father to protect Homare, but she was overpowered and fatally wounded. In the moment of her death, Sumire briefly awakened as an Oni, and the trauma of witnessing this murder triggered the same awakening in Homare. As her sister's blood mixed with her own, a berserk Homare killed her father. This event left her with crippling guilt, not only for not being able to save Sumire but also for the act of killing her own human parent.

In the story, Homare enters the narrative as a classmate and eventual friend of Shiki Ichinose. Her role is initially that of a frightened, hesitant individual whose immense power is a volatile, uncontrollable force. Her ability, born from the mingling of her blood with her late sister's, is a form of Blood Eclipse Release. In moments of extreme stress or fear, Homare involuntarily summons a colossal blood titan she refers to as Sister. This giant, possessing what Homare believes to be Sumire's consciousness, acts as a violent, indiscriminate protector. She has a technique called Shared Demonic Rebirth where her blood manifests this titan, and another named Sorrowful Guts Maiden, which equips the giant with a massive, mouth-like blade to attack with sweeping blood whips. For much of the early story, Homare cannot control the titan, leading to massive blood loss and unconsciousness, making her a danger to both enemies and allies.

Her key relationships are the driving force of her development. Her bond with Sumire is the foundation of her character, representing both her deepest trauma and her greatest source of strength, as the sister she lost still protects her in the form of the titan. Her friendship with Shiki Ichinose proves crucial; his unwavering support and the simple act of believing in her provide the emotional anchor she needs to begin facing her past. She also forms connections with other Rasetsu Academy students, such as Jin Kougasaki and Naito Mudano, who become her allies.

Homare undergoes significant development throughout the series. During a training arc on a snowy mountain, after confiding her tragic past to Shiki, she faces a critical battle. In that moment, she enters an inner dialogue with the spirit of Sumire within the titan, allowing her to finally gain precise control over the giant and communicate with it emotionally. This marks a turning point where she begins to transform her trauma from a source of uncontrolled chaos into a manageable and powerful weapon. Later, during an arc at a research institute, she channels her rage against a misogynistic enemy, and in the Koenji arc, she uses her hard-won emotional stability to help calm another character who has lost control, showing how far she has come. Her journey is one of moving from self-loathing and fear to quiet strength and self-acceptance, learning to value teamwork and protect her friends instead of hiding from herself.
