In 2002, she received her D-3 device and partnered with the male Hawkmon, becoming a DigiDestined and marking the first central pairing with an opposite-gender Digimon. As the oldest of the new DigiDestined, she displayed an energetic, confident, and occasionally impulsive personality. Her technical aptitude led her to succeed Izzy Izumi as president of Odaiba Elementary's computer club, adept at repairing electronics and sound editing. Living in the same apartment building as Cody Hida and Takeru Takaishi, Yolei often helped at her family's convenience store, Ai-Mart, supplying the group with food.
