Description
Chuuya Nakahara is a prominent character in the Port Mafia, serving as one of its five elite executives. He is a young man of twenty-two years with a short stature of 160 centimeters, a physical trait about which he is notably sensitive. Despite his compact frame, he possesses a toned and muscular build. His appearance is defined by his signature black hat with a red hatband, which he treasures as a memento, and a long black coat he wears draped over his shoulders like a cape. He is almost never seen without his black gloves.

His personality is fiery and aggressive. Chuuya is famously hot-headed and quick to anger, often acting on his temper before thinking. He is incredibly confident in his martial arts prowess and his supernatural ability, which leads him to taunt opponents and relish a good fight. However, beneath this volatile exterior lies a surprising capacity for analysis when he remains calm. He also demonstrates a deep-seated loyalty to the Port Mafia, following the orders of its boss, Ōgai Mori, with great respect and dedication. Furthermore, he cares deeply for his subordinates within the organization and becomes enraged when they are harmed. Despite his fearsome reputation as a mafia executive, he has a sense of morality, once showing disgust at a partner's unnecessary violence against a corpse.

Chuuya's motivations are heavily rooted in his mysterious past. He has no memories of his life before the age of seven and later discovers he was created as an artificial life form, a vessel for a destructive entity known as Arahabaki. His own personality functions as a safety lock for this immense power. This revelation drives him to seek the truth about his origins, a quest that defines much of his early life. His primary role in the story is as a powerful enforcer for the Port Mafia, using his strength to protect the organization's interests and engage in its conflicts with rival groups like the Armed Detective Agency and the Guild.

The most significant relationship in Chuuya's life is with Osamu Dazai, his former partner in the mafia. Together, they were known as the legendary duo "Double Black," said to have decimated an entire enemy organization in a single night. Chuuya openly despises Dazai, who constantly teases and outsmarts him, exploiting his short temper. He blames Dazai for many of his frustrations. However, this hatred is undercut by an unparalleled level of trust and synergy in combat. They understand each other's tactics perfectly, and their partnership remains incredibly effective despite their personal animosity. Other important relationships include his subordinate Ryūrō Hirotsu, his drinking companion Motojirō Kajii, and his mentor Kōyō Ozaki, who took him under her wing when he first joined the Port Mafia.

Chuuya undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He begins as the leader of a teenage group called the "Sheep," acting as their protector and trump card. After being betrayed by them under circumstances orchestrated by Dazai, he joins the Port Mafia to ensure their safety, marking a turning point in his life. His arc explores his struggle with his own humanity, coming to terms with being an artificial being created for destruction. Despite this, he chooses to live, embracing his life and connections within the mafia. His character is also defined by his willingness to sacrifice himself, repeatedly unleashing his uncontrollable true power to protect Yokohama and, on occasion, even to rescue Dazai.

Chuuya's notable ability is called For the Tainted Sorrow. It allows him to manipulate the gravity of anything he touches. He can increase an object's weight to crush enemies or render them immobile, decrease his own gravity to achieve incredible speed and maneuverability by walking on walls and ceilings, and even stop bullets in mid-air. He is considered the strongest martial artist in the Port Mafia, and he often enhances his powerful kicks with his gravity manipulation.

The true and most dangerous form of his ability is known as Corruption. Upon reciting a specific poetic verse, Chuuya unleashes this sealed power, which is believed to be the manifestation of Arahabaki itself. In this state, his power becomes overwhelmingly destructive; he can crush tanks with his bare hands and create compressed gravity spheres that act like black holes. However, Chuuya has no control over himself while in this form; he becomes a mindless berserker driven by instinct to destroy everything in his path until his body gives out and he dies. The only known way to stop Corruption safely is for Dazai to use his own ability, No Longer Human, to cancel it out. This deadly symbiotic dynamic is the final, crucial layer of their complex partnership, forcing them to rely on each other to unleash and then contain Chuuya's ultimate power.
