Description
Fels is a mysterious and ancient mage who serves as the direct subordinate to Ouranos, the god who resides in the hidden chamber beneath the Guild in Orario. Operating from the shadows, Fels carries out the will of their master, often acting as the crucial link between the surface world and the Xenos, the sentient monsters living in the Dungeon's deepest floors. Fels's true nature is a closely guarded secret; beneath their flowing black robes is not a living person but a skeleton. This is the result of a cataclysmic event over eight hundred years ago when Fels, once known as a legendary Sage, succeeded in creating the Philosopher's Stone. This artifact granted them immortality, but only at the cost of their flesh, leaving them in an undead state where they no longer need to eat, drink, or sleep.

The personality of Fels is complex, shaped by centuries of life and a profound, self-directed regret. They consider the creation of the Philosopher's Stone to be a great trauma and a foolish act, which is why they reject the title of "Sage" and often refer to themselves as a "fool." This self-loathing is a core part of their identity, yet it does not hinder their confidence in their magical knowledge and combat abilities. Despite their macabre appearance and somber past, Fels possesses a wise, intelligent, and surprisingly empathetic nature. They are known to be a cunning strategist, capable of quickly devising complex plans to avoid conflict with powerful groups like the Loki Familia. They also display a dry, ironic sense of humor, sometimes making light of their own skeletal condition, though they become noticeably irritated if others directly mock it. Fels has shown a deep appreciation for the Xenos, being moved by their desire for freedom and coexistence, and works tirelessly to protect them. Fundamentally, Fels believes that true heroes are often those labeled as fools or hypocrites by society because they stubbornly follow their own ideals, a philosophy they come to see embodied in the young adventurer Bell Cranel.

The primary motivation for Fels is to fulfill the long-held wish of their master, Ouranos: to facilitate a future where the Xenos can live alongside humans on the surface. Having witnessed the futility of the cycle of violence between monsters and people for centuries, Fels is determined to break it. They place their hopes and trust in Bell Cranel, believing his unconventional and idealistic nature is the key to changing the world's destiny. In the story, Fels acts as a hidden guardian and guide, orchestrating events from behind the scenes. They are the one who reveals the truth of the Xenos to Bell and his familia, providing them with missions, magical items, and strategic support. During the conflict surrounding the Xenos, Fels is a central figure, working to protect the sentient monsters from those who would see them destroyed while trying to keep the fragile peace in Orario. Their role is not that of a frontline warrior but a mastermind, a spy, and a sage who uses their unparalleled knowledge to solve impossible problems.

Fels's most significant relationship is with their god, Ouranos, to whom they show absolute loyalty and respect, acting as his hands and voice in the mortal world. Their interactions with Bell Cranel are also pivotal. Fels sees Bell as the fool who can become a true hero and entrusts him with the burden of the Xenos' future, offering guidance and philosophical support. The relationship with the Xenos themselves is one of a protector and ally. Fels serves as their intermediary to the surface, sympathizing with their plight and working in concert with leaders like the goblin Lido and the oriole Gros. Among adventurers, Fels has a working relationship with the Ganesha Familia, especially their captain, and is an associate of Asfi Al Andromeda, who, while a master item creator herself, cannot replicate the most powerful of Fels's ancient inventions.

The development of Fels across the series is subtle but significant. They begin as an enigmatic, almost ghost-like figure shrouded in mystery and personal regret. For eight hundred years, they lived with the bitterness of a failed, foolish ambition, even considering their powerful resurrection magic, Dia Orpheus, to be a useless spell because it never worked. However, witnessing the courage and unwavering determination of Bell and the Xenos begins to change them. The moment their Dia Orpheus spell successfully revives the young Xenos Wiene, it is a profound event. For the first time in centuries, Fels sees the tangible success of a hope they had long abandoned, and they express genuine joy that the magic they resented finally had a purpose.

Fels is an exceptionally powerful mage, classified as a Level 4 adventurer, which grants them physical prowess far superior to any normal person. Their true strength, however, lies in their mastery of magic and their legendary Development Ability, Mystery. They are recognized as the Sage who created the Philosopher's Stone, a feat of magic item creation that no one else in history has ever matched. This ability allows them to craft wondrous and unique artifacts. Among their most notable creations are the Occulus, a crystal for long-distance communication; the Magic Eater, an item that can absorb magical attacks; and a special black cloak that can grant invisibility and block curses. Fels is also a master of Concurrent Chanting, the advanced technique of casting spells while moving or fighting. They possess two powerful spells: Dia Panakeia, a potent healing magic that can cure virtually any wound or curse with effects comparable to an elixir, and Dia Orpheus, a unique resurrection spell. For centuries, Dia Orpheus had a minuscule and never-before-successful chance of working, leading Fels to consider it a burden, but its eventual success in reviving Wiene proved its power as a miracle-granting magic.
