Description
Maki Zenin is a second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High and a member of the Zenin clan, one of the three great sorcerer families. Born without cursed energy due to a Heavenly Restriction, she was considered a failure by her clan and treated as an embarrassment. Her twin sister, Mai Zenin, shared a biological bond that split their cursed energy between them, preventing Maki from reaching her full potential. Determined to prove her worth, Maki left the Zenin clan and enrolled at Jujutsu High, where she trained relentlessly with cursed tools and developed exceptional combat skills to compensate for her lack of innate power. Her initial goal was to become a Grade 1 sorcerer on merit alone and eventually return to her clan as its head, forcing them to acknowledge her.

Maki’s personality is defined by fierce independence, unwavering resolve, and a blunt, no-nonsense demeanor. She projects confidence and strength, often coming across as harsh or demanding, but this exterior masks a deep loyalty to those who earn her respect. She forms close bonds with her classmates at Tokyo Jujutsu High, including Yuta Okkotsu, whom she mentors during his early days, and later with Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and others. Her relationship with her sister Mai is the most painful and central thread of her story; they love and resent each other in equal measure, and Mai’s eventual sacrifice becomes the catalyst for Maki’s transformation.

After surviving the Shibuya Incident with severe burn scars and a drastically changed appearance, Maki is drawn back into conflict with the Zenin clan during the Perfect Preparation arc. When her father, Ogi Zenin, attempts to eliminate her and Mai, Mai uses her Cursed Technique to forge a single perfect cursed tool—the Soul-Split Katana—and dies, cutting the twin bond. This death fully activates Maki’s Heavenly Restriction, removing all traces of cursed energy and granting her superhuman physical abilities on par with Toji Fushiguro, the most feared assassin in jujutsu history. In the aftermath, Maki single-handedly massacres the elite members of the Zenin clan, dismantling the institution that had oppressed her.

By the time of the Culling Game, Maki exists outside the jujutsu system. Her body possesses immense strength, speed, durability, and reflexes that rival or exceed sorcerers actively reinforcing themselves with cursed energy. Her five senses are so heightened that she can perceive cursed spirits and track opponents without needing glasses or a cursed-energy sight. Most critically, having zero cursed energy makes her completely invisible to any opponent who relies on sensing cursed energy, allowing her to approach undetected. This advantage also lets her bypass barriers and domains that target cursed-energy signatures. During the Sakurajima Colony battles, she undergoes intensive training with the sorcerer Rokujushi Miyo, engaging in over a thousand sumo bouts inside a simple domain to sharpen her senses and integrate her mind and body perfectly.

Maki’s motivations evolve from proving herself to the clan that rejected her to honoring her sister’s memory and fighting alongside her allies in the Culling Game. She confronts Naoya Zenin, who has returned as a cursed spirit, and defeats him using her awakened power. Her development is a story of breaking free from systemic oppression, gaining autonomy through loss, and becoming a force that cannot be measured by conventional jujutsu standards. She emerges as one of the most dangerous fighters in the series, a silent, unstoppable presence who represents the rejection of the very hierarchy that once discarded her.
