Description
Nuno Kargan is a supporting character in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is a second-year student in the mechanical department at Asticassia School of Technology and a member of Earth House, the dormitory for students from Earth. As an Earthian and a war orphan, he carries the social and economic disadvantages that come with that background in a school dominated by the powerful corporations of the Benerit Group.
Nuno has a dry, cynical, and somewhat misanthropic outlook on school life and the wider world. He tends to view situations through a practical and money-focused lens, and he is generally realistic, even blunt, about the harsh realities around him. Unlike some of his fellow Earth House students, he has few illusions about how the world works, and he is notably one of the few members of the dorm who has no qualms about the idea of selling weapons if it brings practical benefits. His realistic personality and technical eye give him a distinct perspective within the group, balancing the more idealistic members of Earth House.
He is a self-described geek with solid knowledge of software and computers, though he does not always get to show off his technical strengths. He does demonstrate sharp observational abilities, such as recognizing that the Gundam Aerial's operating system was built by highly skilled engineers and complaining about the low quality of corporate applications. As a student in the mechanical department, he contributes to the dorm's maintenance and technical work.
Nuno's closest relationship is with Ojelo Gabel, another Earth House student. The two are described as partners in crime and close friends, and they are involved together in the underground duel gambling that takes place around the school's mobile suit duels. His friendship with Ojelo is tested when Miorine Rembran proposes the establishment of the company Gundam Inc. Nuno initially believes that selling weapons is the most realistic path for the new company, while Ojelo strongly opposes that idea, and the disagreement leads to conflict between them. Nuno makes snide remarks about the rift, but the two eventually work past their differences, and Nuno goes on to cooperate with the founding and operations of Gundam Inc. alongside the rest of Earth House.
Within the story, Nuno functions as part of the Earth House support network, assisting with technical and logistical matters while the main pilots take part in duels and conflicts. His development centers on navigating his pragmatic survival instincts against the growing bonds and ideals of the people around him, ultimately choosing to support the group despite his cynicism. His notable abilities lie in his mechanical and software knowledge, his practical problem-solving, and his observant, realistic way of assessing people and situations.
