Description
Enya, also known as Enya Geil or Enya the Hag, is a significant antagonist in the story of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. She is an elderly woman who served as one of the vampire DIO's most trusted and high-ranking confidantes. Enya was originally a fortune teller, and she once acquired a set of mystical Stand arrows from a man named Diavolo. She then distributed these arrows to various individuals, a decision that led to the proliferation of Stand users across the world, thus making her actions instrumental in shaping the events of several story arcs. Among those she bestowed with an arrow was DIO himself, and it was she who helped him awaken his own incredible Stand, The World. After witnessing The World's phenomenal power, Enya became one of DIO's most devout and loyal followers, believing him to be an invincible ruler. She is also the mother of J. Geil, another Stand user and a hated enemy of the hero Jean Pierre Polnareff.
In terms of personality, Enya is deeply malevolent and cunning, presenting a stark contrast between her frail, unassuming appearance and her cruel, ruthless nature. She is exceptionally devoted to DIO, viewing him as a god-like savior of the world and holding an unwavering faith in his ultimate victory. This devotion is matched only by her twisted, obsessive love for her son, J. Geil. She perceives him as noble and believes that his defeat at the hands of the protagonists could only have occurred through dishonorable tricks. This combination of fanatical loyalty to DIO and vengeful maternal rage serves as her primary motivation. After learning of her son's death, she is consumed by a desire for revenge, particularly targeting Polnareff, and decides to confront the Joestar group herself.
Her role in the story is that of a formidable mid-boss. Initially, she acts from the shadows, sending a wave of assassins to eliminate the Joestar group on DIO's behalf. Following the failure of these agents and the death of her son, she takes direct action to exact her revenge. She lures the protagonist Jotaro Kujo and his companions to a seemingly ordinary town in Pakistan, which is actually a macabre illusion created from a deserted graveyard using her Stand. Her goal is to manipulate and kill the heroes, with a special focus on tormenting and ending Polnareff's life.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her fanatical worship of DIO defines her allegiance, while her maternal bond with J. Geil fuels her quest for vengeance. She also has a notable, hostile interaction with the Stand user Hol Horse, whom she blames for abandoning her son during his fatal fight. She attempts to kill Hol Horse for his perceived cowardice. Her relationship with the protagonist group, especially Polnareff and Jotaro, is that of a bitter enemy. Ironically, while Polnareff despises her for being the mother of his sister's murderer, he also shows a moment of genuine pity and attempts to save her when she is in mortal danger, creating a complex dynamic.
Enya undergoes a specific narrative development. She begins as a calculating puppet master, orchestrating attacks from a safe distance. However, after her son's death, she becomes driven by a reckless, emotional need for revenge, leading her to engage the heroes directly. Her most poignant development occurs at the moment of her death. After being captured, DIO orders another of his servants, Steely Dan, to eliminate her as a liability. Even as she is betrayed and suffers a gruesome death from a parasitic flesh bud implanted in her brain, she refuses to betray DIO's secrets. She clings to her belief in him until her final breath, denying Joseph Joestar's pleas and stubbornly dying as a fanatic, which paints a tragic and disturbing picture of absolute loyalty.
Her most notable ability is her Stand, Justice. Justice is a Stand that manifests as a massive, intangible cloud of dense fog visible over a wide area, capable of covering an entire town. Its primary power is the control of living beings and corpses through any open wound. If a person has a cut or injury, Justice's fog can enter the wound, allowing Enya to create a clean, round hole and then manipulate the victim's body like a puppet, controlling their movements completely. This control extends to the dead, allowing her to reanimate and direct hordes of corpses as her puppets. The Stand can also create incredibly detailed and solid-seeming illusions, such as disguising a ruined graveyard as a bustling village or making a metal fence appear as a car. Justice itself is immune to physical attacks due to its gaseous nature. However, its main weakness is that it can be dispersed or drawn in by air pressure; Jotaro ultimately defeats Enya by having his Stand, Star Platinum, inhale the fog, which asphyxiates and incapacitates her. She also wields a pair of scissors as a physical weapon to create the initial wounds needed for her Stand's ability. In some adaptations, Enya is also depicted as being able to reshape her own body to appear younger.
