OVA
Description
Gigi is the central protagonist of the original video animation Fairy Princess Minky Momo: La ronde in my dream, and she is better known in her original Japanese context as the magical princess Minky Momo. Her background establishes that she is not an ordinary girl but a princess from a celestial realm called Fenarinarsa, the land of dreams and fairy tale beings. Her parents, the King and Queen of Fenarinarsa, sent her to Earth on a vital mission. The realm was in danger of drifting away from Earth and disappearing because humanity was losing its hopes and dreams, and Gigi was tasked with helping people rediscover their imagination and optimism. To carry out this mission on Earth, she magically became the adopted daughter of a childless couple who run a pet care business, and she is accompanied by three talking animal companions who resemble a dog, a monkey, and a bird.

Gigi possesses notable magical abilities centered on transformation. She typically appears as a twelve-year-old girl but wields a magical pendant in the shape of a stick that allows her to transform into an adult version of herself, appearing around eighteen years old. In this adult form, she can gain the expertise of various professions perfectly suited to resolve the crisis at hand, such as a police officer, a veterinarian, an airline stewardess, or a football manager. Her mission requires her to bring happiness to people in trouble; each time she succeeds, a jewel shines in her home realm’s crown, and collecting twelve jewels would permanently save Fenarinarsa by reconnecting it to Earth. She also travels using a magical vehicle known as the Gourmet Pop or Giromóvil.

The events of La ronde in my dream place Gigi in a unique and challenging adventure. After her Earth parents' plane crashes on a mysterious island, she investigates and discovers a secret garden where everyone remains a child. This hidden world is Kensington Gardens, a fantastical paradise ruled by a boy named Peter who controls a Fountain of Youth that keeps all its inhabitants young forever. In this story, Gigi’s personality shines through as she directly confronts Peter’s philosophy of eternal childhood. While Peter champions a carefree, inert existence without aging, sickness, or war, Gigi argues for the necessity of responsibility and growth, believing that maturing and facing the real world with all its dangers and disappointments is essential. Her guiding philosophy is to reach for one's own dreams and help others find theirs, a belief that drives her to reject Peter's offer to stay in his tranquil but static paradise.

Her role in the story involves not only debating these themes but also taking decisive action. She must rescue her Earth parents and prevent the power of the Fountain of Youth from falling into the hands of an evil organization of corrupt politicians, businessmen, and arms-dealers who launch a military strike on Kensington Gardens. In this conflict, she uses her transformation abilities to fight back, leading to a climactic confrontation where she takes on the invading navy. Her key relationships in this OVA are with Peter, who serves as both an antagonist and a philosophical foil, and with her human parents, for whose safety she is responsible.

Considering Gigi's development across the broader narrative that this OVA fits into, her journey is marked by profound sacrifice and rebirth. In the original television series, before the events of this film, she loses her magical powers due to external conflicts and tragically dies after being hit by a truck full of toys. Rather than return to her celestial home, she chooses to be reincarnated as the biological infant of her Earth parents, severing her ties to Fenarinarsa to pursue a new life as a fully human child. Her development thus transforms her from a magical princess on a divine mission into an ordinary person who must find meaning in a world without magic, embodying an enduring faith in humanity's capacity for dreams even as the fantastic realms fade away.
