Description
Kogorou Mouri is a private detective and the father of Ran Mouri in the anime Detective Conan. He operates the Mouri Detective Agency from his home in Beika Town. He was formerly a police detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department but left the force to become a full-time private investigator. After the high school detective Shinichi Kudo is forced to disappear, Conan Edogawa, the shrunken form of Shinichi, comes to live with him. Unknown to Kogorou, Conan uses a tranquilizer dart and a voice-changing bow tie to solve cases through him, which leads to Kogorou gaining the nickname Sleeping Kogoro and a reputation as a master detective.
In terms of personality, Kogorou is often lazy, boastful, and unprofessional. He is a heavy smoker and a heavy drinker and frequently spends money on gambling and leisure. He is also easily infatuated with attractive women, especially the pop idol Yoko Okino. Despite these flaws, he has a strong sense of justice that shows when people close to him are in danger. He is genuinely devoted to his daughter Ran, though his behavior often frustrates her. In cases that involve his estranged wife Eri or his daughter, he can become unexpectedly serious, focused, and resourceful, revealing a more competent side.
Kogorou primarily seeks to be recognized as a great detective, a desire that grows as he becomes famous as Sleeping Kogoro. However, his deeper motivations are his love for his family: he wants to provide for Ran and hopes to reconcile with Eri. His background as a police officer also instills in him a sense of duty to see justice done.
In the larger story, Kogorou serves as the official detective front for Conan's investigations, allowing Conan to present solutions to the police and the public without revealing his true identity. This makes Kogorou a key component of the series mystery structure. He also provides comic relief through his exaggerated behavior, wrong deductions, and interactions with other characters. Despite his comedic role, he occasionally steps up as a physical protector, using his judo skills or marksmanship to intervene in dangerous situations.
Key relationships define much of his character. His bond with his daughter Ran is central; he is a loving but often immature father who is fiercely protective of her. His relationship with his wife Eri Kisaki is strained by their long separation, but they still have strong feelings for each other, and he often makes gestures to win her back. With Conan Edogawa, Kogorou gradually becomes a paternal figure, unaware of Conan's true identity. He maintains a friendly but often contentious relationship with Inspector Megure, his former colleague, who respects the Sleeping Kogoro persona but is exasperated by Kogorou's awake antics.
Over the long series, Kogorou personality remains largely consistent, but moments of growth appear. When personally invested, he can solve cases without Conan help, showing genuine detective instincts. These events hint at a more capable detective beneath his lazy exterior. His bond with Conan also strengthens, and he becomes more caring and protective toward the boy.
Kogorou is a skilled martial artist, especially in judo, having been the ace of his university team. He is also an excellent marksman, a skill from his police days. These physical abilities make him effective in confrontations. In detective work, he has basic knowledge of crime scene investigation and can often determine cause and time of death accurately. However, his deductive reasoning is usually weaker than Conan, and he normally relies on Conan for complex solutions. When he is fully focused, especially in emotionally charged cases, he can occasionally come up with deductions that even Conan might miss.
