Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is a half-Japanese character who was originally a delinquent youth from Japan. His early life was marked by tragedy and isolation; his father was absent, and his mother died shortly after his birth. In the 2001 anime adaptation, he was left on the steps of a Catholic church in Kanazawa and raised by a priest, enduring discrimination from his peers due to his mixed heritage. His troubled youth culminated when the priest, his mentor, was murdered by agents of the terrorist organization Black Ghost. Wrongfully blamed for the crime, Joe was captured and forcibly transformed into the most advanced cyborg weapon in the Black Ghost project, receiving the designation 009.
Joe possesses a sophisticated cybernetic body that grants him superhuman strength, durability, agility, and the ability to breathe underwater. However, his signature ability is the Accelerator, a device embedded in a switch in his back molar. When activated, this allows him to move at incredible speeds, up to Mach 5 or higher, making the world appear frozen in time. This power comes with significant risks; the extreme air friction generated at such velocities can cause inanimate objects to heat up and burn, and physical contact with normal humans during its use would be lethal to them. In later storylines, such as the conclusion of the GOD'S WAR arc, Joe's potential is expanded when latent psychic abilities are unlocked, granting him powers like teleportation.
At his core, Joe is defined by a strong sense of justice, compassion, and an idealistic belief in redemption. He disdains killing and often tries to reason with his enemies, believing that anyone can change sides. His traumatic past fuels a deep-seated desire to protect others, leading to a self-sacrificing nature where he often tries to shoulder burdens alone. This heroic complex can sometimes cause friction with his teammates, as he may prioritize the safety of strangers or his own mission over their emotional needs. Despite this, he is respected as the field leader of the 00 Cyborgs, serving as their first line of attack and unifying force against Black Ghost.
As the leader, Joe fights to stop Black Ghost's global warfare, driven by a personal vendetta against the organization responsible for all his suffering. He shares a deep bond with his fellow cyborgs, whom he comes to regard as his true family, particularly with Doctor Gilmore, their creator-turned-ally, and the infantile telepath Ivan Whisky (Cyborg 001). One of the most significant relationships in his life is with Francoise Arnoul (Cyborg 003). While depicted with varying intensity across adaptations, their relationship evolves from comradery to a deep romantic connection, consistently portrayed as central to his character. Throughout the series, Joe confronts his past, including the death of the priest and the mystery of his origins, finding closure with the support of his found family.
